Approved for Financing....Freaking out a little

Recommended Posts

Oh, my Gosh. I am freaking out a little. I've been out all weekend with my father and step-mother who were successfully sleeved here in the states but my insurance wouldn't approve the surgery for myself. I got home this weekend and I was talking with my mom about how much I want the surgery and how I just don't see anything but my weight. I'm 28 and have a good job but have a hard time saving for the surgery, she suggested that I apply for financing. I did it on a whim, I don't even have a surgery date set up but I just wanted to see what would happen.

I got approved. I got a phone call and now I'm just excited, scared, ready to do this. I've been thinking about this for two years and the only thing I can think about is how that was two years of terrible diets, prescription diet pills, working out at the gym for no results.

I don't want to tell many people because I have one really snarky friend who just puts me down about the weight and makes comments and if I tell her she'll tell everyone. I know that this is hard, so I really don't want to hear easy way out comments.

I guess it's time for me to get that surgery scheduled but I just had to share my excitement with someone. I'll see Tijuana sometime soon!

Congratulations! If you are thinking about telling someone, keep in mind that Ben Franklin said, "Three can keep a secret if two of them are dead.'"

Congrats I know for me it took me years to make this decision. I have definitely lost a lot and gained a lot throughout the years you're only 28 I wish I would've done it at your age. I go to Mexico on the ninth surgery on the 10th I'm nervous as hell going with Dr. Alvarez @Endobariatrics good luck to us all

@@Hippichick I am so excited, I've seen excellent results from my dad and step-mom so I know this can really work. They're both in their 50's. I think anyone can be successful, I've got some nerves but I think it will be great. I just didn't expect to get approved for financing so quickly. Let me know how it goes and how you're feeling afterwards. Good luck!

Dr. Alvarez, you are brave. I heard BariatricPal dropped him as a provider because he was killing too many people. Since I joined this forum I have heard horror stories daily on that guy so I would recommend doing some research before making that plunge plus there are some really good providers down there that are cheaper and have good reputations.

Be careful with financing on surgeries, I have been researching into it myself and there are companies that add all kinds of crazy terms, fees, and interest rates so I would suggest posting up the terms and getting some feedback on the forum about it before you sign. I'm sure a lot of people on here could lend some helpful advice.

I haven't heard anything bad at all about Dr. Alvarez where did you get your information so I can look into it? I've been researching him for months now you have freaking out.

@@Hippichick I was planning to go to Dr. Alvarez as well and I backed out when he left the company he was with. I heard bad things but I thought it was just the previous coordinator (who was recently fired) running a smear campaign because he and his wife started a different company at a new and better hospital.

The smear campaign I heard was through a company and it was so unprofessional that I changed my mind about having it with them.

I'm really active on the other gastric sleeve forum where Alvarez is a 'featured' surgeon meaning he pretty much 'owns' the forum.. he is doing like 10-15 surgeries a day which is unethical and unsafe. In the last 3 months I've read posts from people who went and he opened up, said he did the surgery, and sent them home and didn't even tell the person it wasn't done so he wouldn't have to refund the money. Anytime something negative is posted they remove it which is why I changed over to BariatricPal. I want surgeons that dont run their people thru like cattle and take accountability when they either make mistakes or don't do the surgery at all rather then steal from you. There are a TON of great surgeons in TJ but that isn't one of them, he just spends the most money buying forum ads which is why its SO important to read reviews.

Helena.. more then HAPPY to reference posts as well as provide VERIFIED patients (with photos taking with Alvarez) along with their horror stories, paperwork from their home doctors and anything else you want. I don't promote ANY doctor as I don't care who someone does their surgery with. It would be BEST if you do it in your home town with a doctor you trust but if you post on here promoting a surgeon then you have to let them see both the good and the bad. If they want to be a great doctor then they have to be ethical and don't want horror stories out there about patients then they need to contact those upset patients and make it right or fix their surgery or something. I would never go with someone doing 10-15 surgeries a day and as far as 'checking facts' I am more then willing to invite over some members from the other forum and have them link to their posts. Bashing is when you don't like someone while I just want both sides of the story heard and maybe that guy will be more accountable to the people he hurts.

In another forum site that I visit often I have read 1-2 very bad reviews for Dr. Alvarez. (Smear post maybe?) However he is very respected surgeon. We live in Fl and my mom's endocrinologist had his books in the lobby and refers her patients to him. Also, are you sure you don't have the name confused? Dr. Alvarez does not work in TJ. He is out of Pidras Negras, MX which if a mile over the Texas border. I forget which city you fly into, I don't have my notebook with me right now... but it is far away from Tijuana.

Original poster, I too am approved for financing with Dr. Alvarez but only for half the amount. The terms aren't that great either. After researching I saw that the company I applied with attaches thousands of $$ in fees to the balance and the APR is high (they quote 1.3% monthly Apr). My credit is ~700 and I was only approved for $4400 of an $8k surgery with such a sucky interest rate. I have $6k budgeted for everything. So as much as I like him, I probably can't use him. :-( Keep us posted what you decide.

Woops your right -- I was referring to Dr Almanza NOT Alverez. So just so anyone reading this is clear.. Dr Almanza = BAD.. Alverez = GOOD. I'll revise the prior posts as well.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
