Cheated on Pre-Op Diet--Help!

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

My sleeve surgery is scheduled for May 11th. I have been on a strict 600-700 calorie per day pre-op diet since Easter (about 4.5 weeks now).

I was doing well and had lost 17 lbs up until last week around this time.

I got so fed up with the nasty "food" they had me eating, that I just fell off the wagon. I ate like crap for three days. I then ate decently for 2-3 days. Then yesterday and today I slipped up again.

I am really beating myself up about this and I can't believe I let myself do it. I fully intend on being as strict as strict can be until the surgery. I'm even considering doing all-liquid until then.

With my surgery in 13 days, I am worried that my liver won't be shrunken enough and they will have to cancel the surgery.

Anyone else have experience with this?

That is a long time to be on the pre-op diet. Off plan eating is going to happen. I did my pre-op voluntarily over two months (they really only required a few weeks) so I could learn what it was like to eat sensibly the majority of the time but still have moderate treats thrown in here or there.

You haven't messed anything up...yet. But be careful not to let the slip turn into an avalanche. Forgive yourself and move on and do the best you can until surgery. Only a few more days to go!

Thank you for the encouraging words!

I am just terrified that my liver is large again and my surgeon will cancel the surgery. And then all of this will have been for nothing and I'm back to square one.

I'm hoping that going all liquid or eating even less than I did before will put me back on track and shrink my liver in the next 13 days!

It's not just the liver the doctor is looking at, it's your sincerity on following a plan that will potentially save your life. You are in charge of that, and no one else. I imagine you were on a pre-op diet for a longer period of time in order to get your liver to a manageable size for surgery, so it is a big deal. The surgeon does not want to harm your liver, so we have to shrink it as much as we can beforehand. My suggestion would be to get back on your plan and stay on it. You have to give yourself tough love to get through this. And be prepared, AFTER the surgery is NO PICNIC, if you have read what people who have had the surgery are writing. It is the most difficult thing to do for most people. For me, the pre-op was a picnic, the rest is just plain hard work. FOREVER.

I had to do a liquid diet for 12 days prior to surgery. I did cheat a little, which I immediately regretted. I would start fresh and do as much liquids as possible that are no sugar/low fat/ high Protein. Pre-op sucks, but it is important. You can do it. Buckle up and stay on the wagon.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Anyone had the TORe procedure? How did it go? How much weight did you loose?

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
