Can sudden Edema delay or cancel WLS?

Recommended Posts

Omg the count down has begun for me & I have 4 days till surgery. I was never on liquid diet but asked to loose certain amount which I did. I can tell I am about to get my period. Lucky me recovery w/ period uggh.. my concern is I get a lot of edema during this time. Alot would be usually I can put on close to 10 pds just in Water weight :/ As of now I am 8pds over does anyone know if they will delay due to this? Also should I call and run this by Doctors office or just leave things alone and go in as planned? Ty for any answers.

well, leg edema or just general edema, if you get pulmonary edema, it sure can, because that a huge risk during intubation. if its leg based they can adjust for that with some meds make you pee it out a bit, also raising your legs for long amounts of time can reduce the edema beforehand as well. if you were teds or stockings, make sure you folow as directed.

The sodium and broth on pre-op diet got to me, and I had it pretty bad in my ankles and feet on surgery day. It wasn't a problem. If I were you I would still call and check... they may want you take a diurectic, although I don't recall hearing about anyone having to do this.

That I wonder Steve. I've always had edema on the ankles & feelt. I wonder though if it is in my lungs because I have been wheezing all of a sudden. I'll throw my legs up as you said, stay away from salt but Ill be sure to mention to anesthesia that I have the edema and asthma going on. They are intubating me also for sure as I have sleep apnea. As much as I dont want this put off I guess better to mention it to be safe then sorry. Ty for replying. :)

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
