Job interfering with surgery...

Recommended Posts

Has anyone else had their job affect their surgery or throw a wrench in the plans?

I have one more appointment for medically supervised weight loss and I am probably going to have to delay my surgery because of my job. I recently was offered a new job within my company that I start on April 27th and the training lasts until July 17th. My last weight loss appt is May 14th and if all goes smoothly, I SHOULD be having surgery in early to mid-June. But now with this training situation, I may have to push it back until training is done. I won't know for sure until I get into the new job, see what the training consists of and meet my new manager.

I have waited so long for this opportunity to have surgery and in the scheme of things, another month isn't a big deal. But it's a real bummer. I also don't know how to explain it to the new manager. I don't know if I should say "I've been trying to get approved for this surgery for "x" amount of time" or if I should just let them know "hey, I have to have this surgery so I need some time off". I really don't want to have to explain what surgery I'm having to someone I don't know or trust. Technically, they can't make me wait or not let me have the time off that I need, but I also don't want to make a bad first impression. I'm just not sure how to handle this.

You don't mention if the training is one of those classroom based trainings which are only offered as certain times or not. My opinion? If the training is specialized and will not recur soon, I would probably have the surgery after the training ends.

Good luck in whatever you choose.

I agree. If the training is something that you can only do now, I would delay the surgery until after training. Assuming you have been with your employer long enough to take FMLA, you should be able to have your surgery and your job as well. I switched positions during the process and just let me knew boss know that I already had surgery scheduled.

Good luck

If you feel training can wait, just tell her you have surgery scheduled for this date.

I also switched job positions right when my approval went through in November. I delayed my surgery until after lots of training, mandatory meetings, ect. When I thought I was in the clear I called the surgeon, who called my insurance & said my approval was still valid. My surgery is may 11th. It's taken almost a year because of the job issue, but I do not regret it at all. Job security!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
