I'm scheduled for surgery on May 18th and my endoscopy is on May 6th. I guess I'm just not very sure about what they're looking for in the endoscopy. Mostly I'm worried that they will find something and I won't be able to have surgery. Can someone give me more information about what's going on in the endoscopy and if it's like a test I can fail? I'm feeling anxiety as this is the last hurdle between me and surgery. Thanks in advance!

They're looking for ulcers, gastritis, GERD, or any other abnormalities in the stomach. I had gastritis. Not a showstopper.

Yes, it's nerve-wracking, but it's a very important procedure for your safety and sleeve success.

Best of luck!

There is a chance that they would find something that would prevent surgery, but this is very unlikely. They will check to see if you have a hernia that needs repaired and will look for damage caused by acid reflux. This is really a way for the doctors to make sure that the your sleeve will be safe.

I just had mine done about 3 months out in case anything is wrong. I was all good. My friend just had his and had ulcers and GERD and wasn't approved for the sleeve. They put him on meds and will check him again closer to surgery date. Don't stress. You have nothing to worry about if you don't have acid reflux!

They are also looking for H-pylori, which you would need to start antibiotics and be on them a couple of weeks prior to your surgery. Again, not a show stopper. EGD is no big deal! Blink and it's done.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
