Concerned about calories.. 8 Days Post Op

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I made a post earlier today and I was going to wait to post another topic on Friday, but I am a bit concerned.

I am averaging less than 150 calories a day.

Today my meals went like this:

Breakfast time: Too nauseous

Snack: sugar free Italian Ice: 60 cal

Lunch: Sugar Free Ice Pop: 15 cal

Dinner: Sugar Free Italian Ice: 60 cal

Snack: Sugar Free Ice Pop: 15 cal

I had a couple sips of Water as well; however, I had a hard time getting water or crystal light down today. All the other days I ate less, but I drank more.

I don't know if I should be concerned or if this is normal?

When was your surgery? If you are nauseous try using warm Water instead of cold, especially after just waking up (the tummy is contracted after not having anything in it for so long). How are you with the Protein shakes? You can try unflavored Protein powder with the addition of Water Enhancer drops to help get in additional Water - they really helped me with my dehydration issue. And if you are still concerned tomorrow morning, please call your surgical team for additional help - that's what you paid them for! All the best to you...

Where's your Protein? You're going to be consuming very low calories right out of surgery, but you need to be getting protein in.

Then maybe try juice that is room temperature. Juice will, for the most part, become a no-no because of the liquid calories, once you are on the solid foods. But for now, you need calories, so drink up!

I probably should add that the juice maybe shouldn't be so acidic, like orange or grapefruit, but ask your surgical team to be sure. Hope this helps.....

if you doctor doesn't want you to start on Protein until Friday, yeah, this is normal. However, it would be good to try and get some Water in between all those Popsicles. We've all got plenty of fat reserves and the human body can go much longer without food than it can water. You need water so you don't get dehydrated. If water is too hard, try ice chips.< /p>

If you are too nauseous to even drink, I would contact your surgeon to get some nausea meds...you need to be drinking. Can you try some warm broth? I found I could handle that a bit more easily than very cold things.

My mother is only allowing me to eat/drink the things specifically on the list.

My surgeons list says popsicles, italian ice, chicken broth , or Jello.

My stomach can only tolerate the popsicles and italian ice so that is what I have been eating.

When I drink I get very nauseous.

Tomorrow, I meet with my surgeon for post pre-op appointment, so I will have to inform him of this.

I'm doing Water flavored with Mio or Crystal Light, sf popsicles and chicken broth. Gurgling but getting it all in!

Some doctors want their patients to do Clear liquids before introducing Protein. OP is doing the right thing by sticking to her doctor's list.

I'm not even allowed my Multivitamin until i go back on Tues. I'm to be completely focused on hydration. I've lost surgical fluids and on my way down!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
