1st appointment, 1st concern

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, I've been a stalker to these pages for a long time and finally went to my first appointment yesterday! Basically a doctor cleared me physically for surgery and I need to be cleared by the behaviorist and the surgeon next. All good news and on top of it all my BMI is actually just over 50, (50.1 to be exact) so my insurance is not requiring me to do the 1 year of medically supervised weight loss. All big plusses for me, but my next appointment is a month away and I'very been told if my BMI drops below 50 I will have to do the year of supervised weight loss.

I know, compared to everyone who has to wait, what am I complaining about. its just that I've never been told to hold off on the losing in the weight department lol

Has anyone else been told this and how did it go? I don't want to gain 10 lbs and be told I'm not ready for this by the behaviorist, but I don't want to lose 5 lbs and have to wait a year for surgery.

I guess I'm just looking for support! Thanks in advanced, can't wait to hear back from you all!

Well if that's what you gotta do just do it :-) don't change any of your eating habits and just stay the same...it's a thin line. If you don't lose any weight, how long do you have to go before surgery can be scheduled? I'm not required to lose any weight pre op neither.

I'm not even sure how many more appointments I need before we can schedule. I think just the one more plus the other tests. I had an EKG done already. I guess I'm just nervous is all.

I think I'd probably have a piece of cake after dinner each night until surgery jut to make sure... Just kidding ... Well maybe only kidding a little. ????

Tell your behaviorist of your concerns. Ask him/her what they advise. :) At the very least he/she will know you are concerned, aware and want to change but why you are afraid. That speaks volumes.

I am in MIchigan also, I have BCN and my BMI was over 50 as well, the MD at Beaumont said that I would be fast tracked due to no other health issues. She said by my next appointment I would need to lose 1-2 pounds. From my understanding they use the first appointment weight to submit to insurance.

I would call the office back to double check :)

I haven't got to meet with my behaviorist yet, the nurse told me to not loose weight before that appointment because they don't submit for the insurance until after the behaviorist approves me. But I will call back today just to be sure

Don't get in the habit of playing games. Many of us have done that before with diets and failed. Change the script and be honest about this. Continue on as normal. Voice your concerns with the behaviorist when you see her. Unless your weight fluctuates greatly most programs use your lowest weight to submit to insurance.

Most programs that I know of use your initial weigh in to determine. :) a That's just MY experience.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
