Will I ever be normal again?

Recommended Posts

I had RNY on 2/25/15 and I feel great! However I find that I am frustrated with the food choices I have been given. Will I ever be normal again? Will I be able to go out to eat with my husband and have something resembling normal food. I know that the portions will be small, but I just feel do deprived. Not of sweets of even carbs, Just normal regular food. Like a baked potato, or a banana, Does this get better as time goes on? Please tell me it does!

Not sure what stage you are on but I am two days behind you and just moved to soft foods. Salmon, tuna, omelette, black bean Soup, crab meat..a few of the things I have had of will have tomorrow. These are foods I enjoyed before. However my " Normal" would have been very large servings with buttered down potatoes, bread and tons of whatever carb I could get. I am electing to not indulge in carbs such as potatoes even though it is allowed.

Perhaps you need to be a bit more creative with cooking or just simply patient until you get to the next phase. Hang in there.

I'm 5 months out and it does get a bit better.....but I have to say, I still don't really have any enjoyment in eating anymore. It's now purely for nourishment. Going out to eat does get better. My stand by meal I get mostly is either grilled chicken or grilled fish and a small baked potato. (of which I eat about 1/3 of) The big problem is, you don't really know how these things are prepared. So a lot of times, I still end up nauseous because of added butter. ( I can't handle butter at all anymore) So eating out just isn't quite the same. But it's a continuous learning process to see what foods you can tolerate and if you can find something at your favorite restaurant that sets well, take advantage of that! :)

But it does get easier as you advance in your diet. ;)

Amylynns ... Although I haven't eaten out yet I previously lost quite a bit of weight and kept it off for several years. I had to become quite assertive when eating out. I would ask how things were prepared...if the waitress didn't know I would ask her to find out. I would ask for things special ordered ...or sauces on the side etc. most places will ablidge and the ones that didn't were scratched off my list as choices. Just the other day when ordering a Decaf coffee with soy the barista asked me, sort of, if vanilla soy was okay...she was almost pouring it in my coffee. I stopped her as I know vanilla has a higher sugar content. We have to be proactive.

Depends on what "normal" is. No, you won't be able to eat everything you used to eat. That's what got you here. But, you will be able to have a wide variety of food that can taste great.

If you prefer breads and pastas and pizza, that sort of thing, then you are not going to be doing that anymore. But stick with lean Proteins, some veggies, a small bit of carbs/grains and you are good. Luckily, you can't eat as much anymore anyway.

Yes, it DOES get better !! Had RNY bypass surgery on 12/15/14 and have lost 66 lbs post op and 40 pre-op. I don't get the same excitement out of going out to eat like I used to but that is because I used to over eat each time we dined out. Now I just eat a small amount of food and usually just have a healthy appetizer or a salad or pick a little bit of food off my wife's plate. But I feel liberated by not feeling as though I'm a slave to food any longer. Focus on getting your Protein in first at each meal and you'll have success. I had no problem tolerating eating a small baked potato and bananas as well about 6 weeks post op. Take it slow and introduce new foods slowly to see what you can tolerate. Good luck !!

I had surgery 9-29-14. I still can't eat meat. I am not sure if it is mental or physical. I had an upper gi. No stricture. I am having an endoscopy next Friday. I can only eat salads at restaurants. I can't do any bread, I get dumping or throw up. I am on a very limited diet. It sucks. I don't get sick from candy or Cookies. I am so mad. My md said everyone is different. It makes me mad. I love chocolate and cookies.

You will be a new "normal". Were you normal before if you ate so much that you needed this solution?? And you may not eat certain things NOW; but you will be able to later. I'm 12 years out and there's nothing I can't eat. You just need to be smart and not eat so much. And going out? I went out 3 days after surgery as my sister needed to eat. I ordered tea and hot Water with which I made broth with a bullion cube. No body batted an eye. You can also ask for sugar free Jello or broths. Potatoes, bread, pasta; you'll be able to do it later. JUST NOT NOW!!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
