Weight gain after Gastric Sleeve?

Recommended Posts

Ok, I'm totally confused by this....

I am doing most things right. I'm not perfect, but I log everything in my fitness pal and keep a good track on my diet and exercise.

For example, I apparently did 9,100 steps yesterday on Fitbit. Which is weird because it was one of my lower activity days I felt.

I ate ONLY about 849 calories yesterday.

Totals 849 36 27 107 1,852 7

849 cals

36 carbs

27 fat

107 Protein

1852 sodium

7 sugar

Besides sodium being higher than I would like, I did decent. Today is my second day on soft foods. Yesterday was my first.

So this morning when I weighed myself, I gained .7 of a pound!

Is this because of eating solid food and it weighing more? My bowel movements have been infrequent. Could that be in play as well? Like am I still on the right track? Is this just a minor setback? I am 3 weeks post op. So could it just be a plateau in combination with being blocked up inside? I feel bloated.

Also, I've noticed I really don't get full. I stop willingly and am content, but never full. I wonder if I really have the sleeve sometimes. I'm usually hungry and I'm able to eat with no problems. I stop when I think I've eaten enough so that I keep on track. Is this normal? While I feel I have much more control over how much or little I eat post-op, I'm still usually hungry and really didn't get all the results that I thought I would have.

I did lose about 50 pounds so far (30 day pre-op diet + 3 weeks post op).

Thank you for your answers.

Your weight can fluctuate a few pounds every day just normally. In addition, yes, the human body can hold several pounds of poop and that does make a difference! You aren't going to see a drop every day, that's just not how things work. If it is going to make you crazy, either stick to weighing yourself only every couple of weeks, or use a site like trendweight to track your weight.

With respect to hunger, are you on a PPI? If not, you might want to look into that. Stomach acid often presents as "hunger" -- your stomach has excess acid floating around and is telling you it needs something to digest. Excess acid does tend to be a problem for sleevers. Even if you are on a PPI, you may want to ask your surgeon about a different, stronger one. If it isn't acid, make sure you are completely hydrated. And then, sometimes people do retain real hunger after surgery. It is just one of those things. It sounds like you are doing a really good job of eating what you are supposed to eat, in the correct amounts, rather than giving in to "hunger" or trying to test your sleeve capacity.

Your weight loss is incredible. That speaks for itself. Keep doing what you are doing and I bet you will be tremendously successful!

Great response. I do have a PIP and just requested a stronger one via email.

I have been able to eat larger amounts quickly after surgery. On pureed foods, I was doing 4oz since the first day I was allowed. 4 oz a meal. Now on soft foods, I do about 2 to 3 oz of food per meal with no problems or tightness or fullness. The only problem I had was post op day 1 with Jello. I guess I am lucky. I am tolerating everything quite well. I always said I had an Iron stomach.... looks like that stands.

I have to do a social event where I have to drink a glass of wine. Long story, but I have to. Not a choice. Its for my profession. I am assuming I will be ok with that and just make sure I limit myself to one, right? No bad side effects besides getting buzzed off 1 glass?

You are doing fine. I know some people report they can't feel restriction at first, but do when they get past liquids and soft foods. I weigh myself daily, and I track it, but only count the weekly weight. Human bodies just do not lose daily, and often bump up along the way, even the trend is steadily down overall. You are doing the right thing by weighing and measuring your food, and tracking calories. Keep up the good work.

One question - how can you be forced to drink alcohol? Just curious - we all have to do things for work we don't necessarily feel like doing, lol. I'd sure try to pretend like I was drinking it, though. Not sure what your doc's "rules" are, but that was off limits for me at 6 weeks.

FYI, in case you didn't get this info, "alcohol is dangerous because it has a more concentrated number of calories per serving than other carbohydrate. Carbohydrate has only 4kcals per gram. Alcohol is 7kcals per gram. Calorie content varies tremendously because of the other ingredients (sweeteners and such) and the concentration of alcohol." This is from a handout I received as part of a "behavioral slip" informational sheet at a support group meeting. These calories can add up really quickly, which is why, I believe, it is so frowned upon. Kind of a wake-up call!

I, too, am curious what type of job one might have where you are FORCED to drink alcohol. How can that be? What if you are diabetic? Driving home? A recovering alcoholic? Seems like a liability to me.

I am not a prude by any means. I loved a glass of wine (terrible heart burn now, I can't do it) before, and I drink a few beers or hard ciders on the weekends now, but there is no way in H E double hockey sticks that someone is going to tell me I **HAVE** to drink alcohol if I don't want to.

Educate me!! :D

I work in promoting the wine industry and it is for a wine event on a new bottle we are coming out with. So yeah, being forced is pretty much it.

Thanks for the answers. I talked to my NUT about it. She's onboard. She feels my weight loss is well above average for this stage in the game and my healing seems to be above average so one glass won't kill me, just make sure that I don't eat and drink at the same time. Told me to go for mashed potatoes, baked fish and maybe some Soup to keep it easy on my stomach. It's a dinner/private unveiling ceremony that's worth a lot to my company and I'm the project head/Director... so yeah not having a sip (or 2 if I like it) would be very weird.

Also if you are diabetic or such, then I recommend not working in my industry. I barely drink by the way, only at events like this.

sounds like you are doing awesome ... one thing I did early on was to make a decision to weigh only once a week ... same time and same day ... for me, that is Monday morning when I wake up to get ready for work ... this eliminates a lot of the day to day frustration of weight fluctuations, helped me with my family as they know that is when I weigh so they aren't constantly asking :)

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
