Reflux before and after sleeve

Recommended Posts

Hi, new to site. Kaiser Colorado and sleeve date is April 23!

I have always had gerd. It is controlled now and was wondering what others experience is with gerd post-op with their sleeves. Also what size are your bougies? I'm 5'6 and 267 lbs can hardly wait to join the losers circle.

I have gerd, had it before surgery too, it got a bit worse...I changed my bed to one that can go up and down I sleep in a more upright position-lying flat will make it so much worse (as I am sure you already know) I take omeprazole every day, I also take ratidine at night if I feel it flaring up. I went to costco and got myself a big supply. I don't suffer any ill effects.

I had it before i got sleeved so my surgeon checked me for a hiatal hernia during the pre-surgery phase and i had one -so i had a hernia repair done at the same time and it helped fix that problem. After i lost about 80 something pounds my gallbladder threw a stone and i had that removed in January and now i don't have it at all. I think the hernia repair is what really helped with my GERD tho. Good luck!

Thanks good information. I was told I had a hernia 15 years ago and when I took the h. Pylori drugs, it disappeared. My surgeon will also repair what she finds. So sorry you had to have another surgery.

I had been treated for asthma for like 10 years prior to surgery. When they did my EGD and found evidence of GERD along with a hernia they sent me to a pulmonologist who confirmed it. Not asthma, chronic coughing from GERD. Put me on a ppi and it cleared up immediately. The first month after surgery it was way worse. I raised the head of my bed which helped and they doubled the PPI. Much better! Then with healing and weight loss much MUCH better! I still take the ppi but no symptoms anymore.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
