How long from first consult to surgery date (Self Pay)?

Recommended Posts

April 10th is my Initial surgeon consult, NUT, and Psych Eval. I am self pay. What on average can I expect?

TIA!

I had all my paperwork, 6 month diet, nut, psych in a pile the day of my consult and approval took less than 2 weeks so insurance wasn't really a large part of my timeline. It depends on your hospital, but it took about 4 weeks to schedule and complete the EGD, pre-anesthesia testing\blood work, etc and get scheduled in the OR. My surgeon also had a "lose 10 before surgery to shrink your liver" rule, so I needed the 4 weeks to get it off.

It took me about 2 months but that was because I also had a business trip that I wanted to wait until was over. I think realistically you could do 1-2 months out. Even though I was self pay I still had ekg, nutritionist, psych eval and blood work to get done. I also had to do a 2 week under 40 grams of carb diet before my surgery to shrink my liver. I didn't think that was bad at all compared to what others have to do. I lost 10 lbs those two weeks.

Good luck-

I've seen other self-pay posters where the turnaround time is pretty quick compared to those of us that have insurance. Mine only covered 80%

I was all self pay and the day of my first consult I got approval and my date set that day. We scheduled it a month out only because it was his first open appointment or I would've went sooner. I also had to have time to get in my throat test and my week of liquid dieting before surgery so it needed to be at least 2 weeks after my first consult.

I was super surprised that I walked out of my first appointment with a surgery date.

I'm 2 months post op now and doing great. 30 pounds down in 8 weeks!

I was the same way. I am self pay from Missouri as well and my surgery date is 5 weeks from my consult. That was the next soonest surgery date available. Plus it leaves me time to do the EGD (which has to be done two weeks ahead of surgery to check for H. Pylori) and a 7 day pre op liquid diet.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
