To be better prepared (mentally) that the weight comes off much slower than I thought ....even with following my diet and exercise program carefully.

Not have wasted money on so many Protein powders and flavorings that I didn't end up using post-op.

Jamie what did you use post op? My surgery is soon and I'm trying to shopping for "food" post op

Until I was allowed solid foods, I mostly just used EAS AdvantEDGE Carb Control (rich dark chocolate) ready-to-drink shakes from Walmart and Target. I had bought a bunch of different Protein powders and several flavors of Torani sugar-free syrups to make my own shakes post-op, but I really hated all of them. I just added a little unflavored whey isolate to the AdvantEDGE shakes to get a little more protein in and most of my flavored powders and the syrups I'd bought went to waste.

@@theotherfatgirl - I agree with @@Jennifer4775 about my weight loss expectations after surgery - the weightloss is slower than I would have expected. Also, my NUT did suggest that I NOT stock up on too many Protein powders, drinks, etc. prior to surgery (which I did not do) because taste preferences can change following surgery.

I am 6 days out and I would not have committed to anything this week. I am getting fatigued pretty easily and not as easy to get around in a vehicle as I thought it would be.

I would have done that without a doubt lol now I'll wait

I would have spent less time worrying that I was making the wrong decision and spent more time looking forward to how it was going to be. This surgery was the nicest thing I've ever done for myself. I wish I had done it years ago!

I just would not have worried so much about everything.....the surgery, the pain, the "is this normal?" stuff, the smoothies, the Vitamins, the food....do I have enough?....do I have the right kinds of food? , the exercise. It all falls into place one day at a time. I found my way. I am doing it one day at a time and I am thrilled with it!

You will find your way too, no doubt.

Good luck to you!

I concur with what @@bobbyswife and @@Bobby46 have said. You will find your way one day at a time. Everyone's journey is different, but having all this information on BP available has been a huge help with giving me ideas, encouragement, understanding why some things happen or not. You will do fine!!! Just do what your surgeon recommends along with your NUT, and anyone else on their staff who is involved in your care.

As a side note - Several days after my surgery, I started having some problems and had to be admitted to the hospital again (for 19 days) which was so totally not fun. I won't go into the details, but mention it only because my recovery from the sleeve surgery was delayed until I returned home and was able to begin adjusting to my new tummy without all the other cr*p I had to deal with. That being said, I took it one day at a time and began figuring out what worked for me food-wise and exercise-wise. During those 19 days in the hospital I lost about 30 lbs. and a lot of muscle and strength so I was recovering from that as well as the sleeve surgery. As I got stronger each day, I was able to do more physically (not jumping huddles or anything) and was able to begin regular foods as tolerated. All is great now and I have no regrets about the sleeve surgery :D or the challenges that followed.

In addition to the things mentioned by others in this thread, I would have prepared myself to be okay with the fact that I'm still "me" on the inside. I would have gone to a councilor to deal with the way I see myself and my outlook on life. I was so wrapped up in looking forward to the weight loss, that it never occurred to me to question my self image and how life was going to change once I lost the weight. Now I'm playing catchup.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
