Question for the slow losers

Given that I was a rapid loser to start with and I've slowed to a crawl (average daily weight loss last 30 days is 0.34lb/day)

Sorry. Pretty hard for me to sympathize with you there! I lost 0.6 pounds last week and 1 pound the week before that. At least the scale is still moving.... occasionally. Just calculated it and over the last month I'm averaging 0.18 per day. My "crawl" is half as fast as yours.... or is it twice as slow?

Hello everyone,

I have not posted in a while. I believe I am a slow loser also. I had surgery March 2014 and I am down 79 lbs. I seem to have been at the same weight for the last month or so. I did not start exercising until Nov 2014, due to my work schedule, now I have no excuse since I am not working right now. I do my Protein, Water, Vitamins but I need to up my exercise days, watch my salt intake, and probably add some strength training. I am due for my follow up with my surgeon but he is 2 hours away and I had to cancel twice due to the snow. I live in Northern NJ, we are in the midst of a storm now. I was starting to feel that this was it for me as far as losing anymore weight. I had to remember this is a tool not a fix. I also had to be grateful that I lost 79 pounds. I want to be under 200's in One-derland as the sleevers say. I also was striving to get into a normal BMI range but maybe that is not practical for me. I will talk to my surgeon and keep pushing to reach my goal.

I've been at the same weight for 3 months+ and still have 50-60 pounds to lose. I know, I know, I know.

There are benefits to slow loss.

Your body needs to reset itself after a significant loss before it will allow more loss.

It is better to have that weight off than on.

However, In 6 1/2 months, I've lost 47 pounds. I'm at a total loss of 60 since pre-surgery. My expectations were way higher than this. Others who had the surgery at the same time are down more than 90 pounds. I so wish I was down 90 pounds as that would put me 10-20 away from my goal.

I'm doing everything right.

I have to keep the faith that it'll happen. And I'm still motivated.

I upped my Protein more than my nut recommended and my scale went down 2 lbs, I'm at 199 today. I've finally hit that all elusive onederland, it's has escaped me for 11 years. Now to see if I continue to lose with the increase in protein.

@@AuriP - Can you share how much you upted it? And are you tracking carbs and fats? If so where do you try to keep them. There's a sweet spot I'm sure the body likes and it looses more when you reach it. My problem is at this point it's all a guessing game as to how much of each I should be eating! Congrats on the loss and fingers crossed it keeps on moving down at a faster pace!

I think I'm a low loser over here. I think a lot depends on how fast you are loosing, start weight, the procedure, start weight, age, your bodies metabolic relationship with crash dieting, how effective your exercise is for your specific needs.

I weigh myself weekly (a watched scale never drops) and I'm 7 weeks out. I only lost .9 pounds this week with a previous average of 2-3.

I've also crash dieted, its the week before my cycle and I'm approaching 40. So, I just decided to Celebrate like a boss my percentage of a pound like I was on Biggest Loser! LOL :)

Sounds like you and I are right on the same pace. I have lost 46.8 pounds since being sleeved on Sept. 1. Hang in there! What else can we do except keep pushing forward?

Congrats on reaching Onederland! What are you up to now protein-wise? My nutritionist wants me to aim for 100 grams and I get that or maybe a bit more most days.

Yes, August 24. The dietician is baffled, too. But, I still feel a lot of restriction. I'm definitely not over-eating, though likely under-eating for my exercise level. Makes me want to scream - "they" always have said, eat less, exercise more - that's the key!! Right! Not!

I'm sure I'm not at 100 g of Protein - almost never. And I'm not eating enough fat. Though, the fun thing is adding and experimenting with coconut oil with a touch of butter for extra deliciousness (when sautéing veg). My dietician says, eat the protein!! But . . . don't I also have to have veg??? I cannot eat meat alone.

I am not eating noodles, bread, crackers, rice, etc. Not because I don't want to (not, really), but they make me feel perfectly awful if/when I do eat them. And they almost never stay in.

Quinoa stays. Cooked veg (all of them) stay. Yay spaghetti squash and acorn squash! I have had potatoes the odd time; I have never really been a fan. And maybe because they are natural as they are, they are tolerated. Or maybe because they are 'something different' when I do have them. But I really don't have them. Protein and veg is my lunch and dinner almost always. Occasional Soups. Protein shake is my Breakfast almost always. I tolerate fish and seafood very, very, very well. Yummy.

I see what you mean but consider this. You had your surgery two months before I did. Not counting the 10 pounds I lost on preop liquids which was Water weight anyway, I've lost 37.6% of my excess body fat. Looking at your numbers, it looks like you've lost about 45%. I know you're kinda bummed about being a slow loser and I admire your post I've seen around about accepting that about yourself and making the most of your journey. But when you look at how many pounds people have lost alone, it's easy to lose sight of the overall picture. I know you know the saying, the more you have to lose, the faster you lose. I had a lot more than you to lose and now I'm closer to where you started and it's slowing down.

So maybe instead of looking at being a slow loser because the pounds aren't adding up, we should start looking at where our percentage of excess body fat is compared to where we started.

LOL look at it this way, would you rather be a slow loser with only 34 pounds to go or a faster loser like me with 90 pounds to go?

**UPDATE**

As someone said above, a watched scale never moves. But until this completely horrible, rotten stall was over, I was watching. Well, as of this morning, I'm down 2lbs. Granted, I may not lose any more this month, but the scale MOVED ;)

My sister, who is on Weight Watchers and losing FASTER than me, recommended I cut out some of the strength training for a while and just concentrate on cardio. She also told me to try a little more fruit. Well, after 4 days of cardio and upping my fruit intake a little (along with my calories), it seemed to do the trick. Or my body just said "I give up!". Either way, I'll take it. :D

I love this thread so much. Makes me not feel so alone in my slow loserness. I know my grown kids, my husband and my sisters get tired of hearing it. It's nice to commiserate with others who understand. Keep on keepin' on, slow losers!

My nut always wanted me to stay at 60 mg but that wasn't happeneing. I started using supplements and using those getting my 60 required, then whatever I eat is bonus, so maybe up to 90 or so grams. I don't eat much in the way of fat so I don't track that like I should, I do know I stay within the recommended for my fitness pals 1200 calorie diet.

I'm not eating any veggies. I was never a big fan before, so I don't miss them and I supplement to high heaven to make up for the lack of them. But there is simply NO WAY I could have room for them and still get my 100 grams of Protein in. As it is, I am already eating 6 times a day to get in all my Protein. If I were to try to make room for veggies in there, I would definitely miss out on some protein.

      Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

      2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

        I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

        I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

      I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

      Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

        I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation.       On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
