My cholesterol has jumped up by 30 points!

Recommended Posts

Ok, so my cholesterol was 201 just prior to my sleeve in June 2014, and as of yesterday it is now 231... I've lost weight, more active, is it my meat Protein source? I'm thinking others have had the same issue, so what should we be eating? I dont eat eggs and not much cheese, but I do eat red meat pork, chicken fish and nuts.

Mine has jumped too. It has to be from the high Protein diet we are on. But I'm not sure what to think about it just yet. I have a doc appointment in May and will ask then.

Curious too.

My cholesterol also jumped since the surgery and massive weight loss. I hesitate to blame the high Protein diet because I was on a high Protein diet when my cholesterol was going down.

Also, the newest research about cholesterol is telling us that it is much more complex than first believed. Long term studies have called into question the "lowest is best philosophy". While my doctor is still worried about my turnaround and put me back on a statin, I'm not overly concerned. I'm following his orders just to hedge my bet, not because I think my raised levels are really high enough for concern.

2 things: 1) did your HDL go up? You need to have your HDL, LDL, trigs, and VLDL taken. My HDL was routinely in the 70-80's and early 90's before surgery. Now it is regularly over 100 and throws everything off. 2) HDL goes up for 2 reasons: 1 you have a genetic issue in terms of Japanese or anorexics get it.

Same thing swimbikerun said - you need the different components, both from before and now. But HDL also goes up with weight bearing exercise - i.e. climbing stairs, lifting weights.

Some of the latest research on cholesterol indicates that cholesterol is not as strongly tied to negative health risk as earlier believed. I suspect that your current meal plan is O.K. but you can consult with your nutritionist. Generally the drivers to focus on is diabetes and high blood pressure.

I will be visiting my primary doc and I know she will pull all the tests for this. I think I need to lower my meat consumption and add more fish, but will still get this checked. Thanks all for the the feedback.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
