I am pre-banded. I start my day with powdered Slim-fast mixed with soy milk because it is easy and I like the consistency and taste. However, it has a lot of sugar--in fact that's the first ingredient. I know that after post surgery, I will need to drink a lot of shakes. I am very picky about the taste and texture. I wanted to start trying some now, so that I would already know which ones I like and have them ready for after surgery.

Soes anyone have suggestions as to shakes that you like? I don't really like the flovor of the canned ones, but if I must . . .

Hi, eyespy,

Here is another thread that discusses Protein shakes that people enjoy:

http://www.lapbandtalk.com/f76/protein-shakes-33926/

I did want to say that my nutritionist told us that it was more important post-diet to be getting in Protein anyway you can (even if that is through caloric drinks). If you can't find another Protein Drink you like, you might just stick to what works for you, at least until the solid stage when you can eat protein foods that you like.

Good luck!

I bought powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury chocolate and vanilla Protein shakes and they are really good and pretty much filling. I mix each shake with 8 ounces of skim milk and a splenda packet and I actually thing they're pretty good! I didn't care for the strawberry sorbet but apparently it's a huge seller. Each shake has 20 grams of Protein, 4 carbs, 100 calories. As for the skim milk, I know one cup has 9.5 grams of protein and 90-110 calories but I'm not sure of the carbs.

For my immediate post-op phase, I bought the 20 ounce bottles of Isopure Zero carb drinks--I would dilute them with a little Water to make them more palatable but each bottle contains 40 grams of protein and I made sure I had one and a half every day. (I liked them all except mango peach)

Good Luck!

I am almost a year out from being banded and I still have at least 1 if not 2 slim fast shakes a day. I mix the powder with 1% milk and add chocolate Protein powder and ice and mix it in my magic bullet. I LOVE them. My doctor approved me having the Slim Fast because I couldn't stand the Carnation Instant Breakfast. I also do not care for SF in the can. I'm even having my knee surgeon prescribe the SF for me so I can have it when I'm in the hospital and the rehab center. Yes, it has sugar in it, but not enough to sabbotage your weight loss efforts.

I know there are a lot of others that can suggest alternatives if you really want to stay away from the SF.

Thanks.

Amy, I have heard several people on this website talk about unjury, but I have never heard of it. Where do you get it? What is the consistency? Is is thick or thin? A lot of shakes I have tried are about the consistency of milk. I don't care for that.

Stephanie, That's a good idea. If I mix it with something else, that will cut the overall % of sugar.

How lond did you have to wait before having Protein shakes? I guess that's the stage after Clear liquids.

I purchased "Any Whey" online and it really is flavorless and is undetectable to me, so far. It blends right into my smoothies and I have used it in thinned lowfat pudding, too. It has a very fine consistency and mixes instantly. I'm 5 days post-op and it has really boosted my Protein counts for each day. 17 grams/scoopful. I use it half-strength (1/2 scoop) in 8 oz skim milk as a base for my smoothies. As a change of pace, I occasionally use a tablespoon or two of lowfat dry milk in the smoothies base but the Any whey is what really ratchets up the protein for me.

I just tried a 35gm Protein Shake in a can for the first time today. I found it at Trader Joes and the company was Worldwide. chocolate flavored.

Yucky poo poo!!!!:eek:cough cough.... Do most Protein Shakes in a can have that weird underlying flavor?

I have not been banded yet, possibly at the end of June or beginning of July, so I am trying out stuff now so I will know what to get when the time comes.

Hi..reading your Protein Shake questions. My favorite is GNC 100% whey powder..chocolate carmel. YUMMO.

1 scoop Protein mix

1 container light yogurt

1/2 container skim milk

1/2 glass crushed ice

I put all this in the blender

Dont have the figures here at the desk but you get protein from the powder and yogurt both. Its like a malt. SOOO good

And Welcome to the Unjury Homepage I have tried the vanilla and chocolate. Both good. Not banded yet but I have been trying different ones so I can have what I like on hand at home.

I ordered a whole bunch of stuff to try out before I was banded, too. I actually prefer the unjury chocolate mixed with an EAS AdvantEDGE low carb shake. That shoots me full of 38 grams of Protein and it tastes pretty good - blended with a couple of ice cubes. Now that I'm 2nd week post-op, I can use fruit in my shakes and yesterday had 2 scoops GNC vanilla 100% whey Protein, 2/3 c. skim milk, 2 inches of a banana, 1/4 t. vanilla and 1/4 t. cinnamon. Handfull of ice and YUMMY!!! Like a Dairy Queen.

Bariatriceating.com has stuff too - they actually have a 42g. whey "bullet". It's like a little juice thing that's pretty good. 3 oz. of liquid (refrigerate it and/or drink over ice). It's a little thick - sort of like liquid Jello. But, tasted OK and is a quick way to get a huge shot of protein.

I bought the Unjury at the unjury website--I see someone posted the web address for you. You can buy samples before purchasing a large amount. When I make mine, after it's blended, I add about 4 ice cubes and crush it and it makes it thicker like a milk shake! My diet was Clear Liquids for 2 weeks but I did add the Protein Shakes in during week 2 because I was dying! :omg: I also purchased a bottle of Whey protein--I added it to my yogurt to give me extra protein--you can't taste it and if I remember correctly each scoop has 17 grams of Protein in it.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
