You'd think I'd learn!

I was very thirsty for a pop (soda) so I got a diet coke at a drive-thru McD's. I took 4 gulps than doubled over in pain. So it's waiting for the ice to melt to take out the carbonation. I think I dislike that the most going on a year post op, not being able to gulp drinks. My head sees one thing and my stomach informs me of my mistake.

Are you able to at any point and time drink soda? I was told that was something I needed to understand that pretty much going to have to give that up for a life time. I still hear that a lot of my friends on here are in the sipping stage and I can drink just fine but I don't know if I would be bold enough to gulp. lol Sorry for the pain and hopefully you will learn! lol every day is a learning processes.

Soda of any kind is one of the things I gave up for life right before surgery. I was pretty astonished when I didn't have a single craving for it after surgery.

I drink pop infrequently AFTER I let it uncarbonate. Be it by letting it set overnight in a cup and letting the ice melt or pouring it in a cup and stirring til it goes flat. This HURT! I've lost 117 lbs 10 months.

i had like one sip of soda and the carbonation made me so gassy..to my understanding the reason we aren't suppose to drink the soda is because it can stretch out our stomach and in turn making the surgery in vain.

If you let it go flat then it no longer has fizz or carbonation. It's a personal choice. I don't mind flat pop but a lot of people don't like it that way. Putting it in a cup and stirring it vigorously does the trick removing fizz.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
