Developing Diabetes After WLS?

Recommended Posts

Today I woke up with a horrible UTI (Probably my 3rd in the last 6 months) so I went to the Dr's and she did a Urine Test that came back positive for High Sugar content and she went on to say that she wants me to come in and get blood tests done for Diabetes after I finish up with my Antibiotics...I am 5 months Post-Op and 65lbs down, has this happened to anyone else?, Is this even possible?.. I mean I thought diabetes was something you got before losing weight not after!..I had mentioned this to her and she just chuckled at me and was like "Anything is possible".

I want to call BS on the whole thing and say that her test strip was simply wrong, But I don't really know.

Sees unlikely since I just had a urine test done 2 months ago and everything was fine, I had a battery of tests done this past summer before surgery and everything came out ok and I have no other symptoms of diabetes I feel great, No family history either..

WORSE VALENTINES DAY EVER...

I'll mention I also have PCOS, Not sure if that makes a difference or not.

PCOS is insulin resistance and can mimic diabetes. Don't freak out just wait to see the results. It'll be ok

@@CountryGirl5584 Thanks, I'll try to calm down. It's just Diabetes isnt something I thought I would have to worry about after WLS and I feel scared, I know nothing about Diabetes...I know it's not a death sentance but still very worrisom.

Rapid test strips can certainly have false positives; I don't happen to know the rate of error for sugar content in urine.

I wouldn't worry at this point; a blood glucose test and an A1C test will give a more definitive answer.

I agree with @Sharon1964. The A1c is the definitive test. I had a followup 3 months out with my surgeon. My blood sugar is a lot less, but still is labeled "high." He also told me that, blood sugar should continue to go down as you lose more and more weight.

Doing aerobics 45 minutes - 1 hour per day gives you an 80% chance of not getting diabetes. If you already have it, that exercise minimizes it.

Diabetes isn't necessarily just an obesity related disease. There are 2 types, one comes from being overweight, and one is likely genetic. My dad is a thin man, and a diabetic, as was my uncle. During pregnancy, I had gestational diabetes, my urine would have high Proteins or sugar if I was dehydrated. I would ask about that also.

I don't have anyone on either side of my family who has diabetes. I was high risk when I was pregnant but only because I had High Blood pressure, but never showed any sign of diabetes.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
