What can I eat @ diner

Recommended Posts

One month out from RNY, have the all clear to eat regular foods. We are heading, as a team, to a diner for Breakfast tomorrow. I don't eat eggs. What can I get? English muffin w/butter? Can I have a slice of bacon? A sausage link? A pancake w/out Syrup? Hash browns? A blueberry muffin (the namesake of the diner - it's what they're known for :) )So confused. My tastebuds are changing and my family is pushing me to try egg... The mere thought makes me want to gag, but maybe I'll snag a bite of someone's tomorrow and give it a whirl.

TIA for and advice :)

Not quite to a month but congrats! My advise. Leave the carbs, have Protein.

Protein first. Protein first. Protein first. The would be a sausage, etc. It's also eggs-but I'm sure they have other choices for you. I have always liked eggs so I'd opt for a cheesy omelette. I'd stay away from high sugar and high carb foods.

Good luck and congrats. Chew chew chew.

I'm wondering ... did your surgical team tell you what they wanted you to do? Do they have a salad you can get? That would be better as everything you list is either carbs that aren't good for you or fatty meats (sausage & bacon). The sausage and bacon would at least be Protein.< /p>

Thanks friends :)

I didn't call surgical team - this came up last minute, right before I posted here. I'm too nervous to eat a salad, haven't done that yet (though love salads and can't wait to start eating them again!) ... I wanted to do Protein but was thinking the fat wouldn't be good. Oatmeal sounds perfect though! I just looked at the menu and they have sandwiches too - I might opt for a turkey or chicken salad sandwich, and just eat around the roll... Yummy Protein in that right? We'll see what I'm hungry for, when I get there.

Thanks again!!

Yeah, if you liked eggs, that would have been good but oatmeal is a great option. But, so are the sandwiches. I do that a lot, just don't eat the bread and use my fork and knife to eat the Protein.

You also did the right thing by looking up the menu ahead of time. That really helps. Isn't technology great?

chicken salad might be risky; depending on how they make it, there could be a lot of sugars and fats. I'd stick to something as plain-jane as possible, where you know there's only so much they can do it mess it up for you. :)

Most restaurants are very helpful if you explain that you are on an extremely restricted diet and only want XYZ. Since diners basically have everything on hand, they in particular will make you pretty much whatever you want. For example, If you just asked them for 3 oz of plain grilled chicken, I know they could do it for you.

My go to meal at the diner is a poached egg on toast but that won't work for you. Sometimes I get a tuna sandwich and just eat the inside. Last week I was cleared for salad so I got a small greek salad. It was heavenly ????

My other thought is corned beef hash since it does have Protein. It's fattier and has more carb though. You won't be able to eat all of whatever you choose. I always bring a doggie bag home. Folk at the diner don't think twice about packing up the leftovers.

As an aside I live in north jersey where you can't drive a mile without passing a diner. We have our favorites and know the owners, wait staff etc. Needless to say my ordering habits changed drastically after I had sleeve surgery 12/23. I simply said I had stomach surgery. Everyone has been so sweet and supportive! I think diner folk are just the best ☺️

You're getting very good advice here Mama. You will have to learn as others have said, to stay away from the carbs and fats and think Protein first. I can count on one hand, the number if times I've eaten carbs at breakfast since being banded. It's all about Protein. Mostly eggs, oatmeal, yogurt. Same for lunch and dinner. I do have carbs...but in very limited amounts.

Just remember success will happen if you eat less and eat smart. The surgery just helps to make that easier to adhere to. Good luck!

Yogurt or oatmeal. I'm 2 mo post op and had a salad with grilled chicken the other day (eaten in 3 meals) and it was fantastic, by far the best thing I've eaten since pre op. And it didn't upset my stomach or give me any digestive issues. Finally I'm able to eat more regular foods without nausea!

I had gastric sleeve surgery and thought oatmeal was a bad food (too many carbs). I miss Cereal or oatmeal in the morning but thought they were bad due to carbs. Are things different fro RNY surgery? I did order some Breakfast foods from My bariatric pantry because I am not a fan of eggs and am tired of omelets.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
