Im a newbie here...Had the band on 5-25,after being released, i started having abdominal pain and vomiting. Went in for an upper GI and found that swelling had closed the band completely. Nothing was getting through, even after taking out the initial 2cc's of Fluid. Now in the hospital for 48 hours of rehydration and hoping the swelling goes down. If it doesn't my surgeon says using a bigger band. Surgery wasn't too bad, but I sure don't relish doing it a second time.

Anyone have similar experience out there? Looking forward to feeling human again.

Wow, I can't believe they did a fill on you at surgery. Usually them make you wait 6 weeks for a fill at least. I hope the unfill helps you out and you don't have to do another surgery. Good Luck!

I guess some surgeons do fill a couple cc's in VG and large bands, but it sounds like Ernie has the 4cc band, so 2cc's does seem crazy full to me. Lots of men require the large band, their stomach walls are thicker (on average) than women.

Ernie, I hope that you won't have to pay anything out of pocket for this second band. It was your surgeon's choice to put the smaller band in.

Hi Ernie,

I was banded 5/24 and am having the exact same problem. I am back in the hospital today for fluids too. My surgeon said the same thing, if swelling doesn't go down I have to have the larger band in or this one out.

However, he did say we could wait it out a bit as I am getting some Fluid down. I find that the warmer the liquid (warm tea, broth) the easier it goes down now. I posted another thread (think it was titled "desperately need some help" or something like that if you want to check out the responses) and got that suggestion from someone who had the same problem. My surgeon said it's rare but it does happen. He said the more you have to manipulate the stomach during surgery the more issues you have with swelling. He said in retrospect, he should have put the bigger band on. Lovely....

I'll tell you I do feel a little better today. One of the responses to my other thread said it took her 9 days to get anything down. I guess it's just a waiting game at this point. It's all we can do. Do you want your surgeon to put in the larger band? I really don't. Just not emotionally ready to go back in to surgery or financially ready to pay for another band/surgery/hospital stay (I'm self pay).

Either way, I know you will feel better soon. Just hang in there. I know that's easy to say but I completely know what you are going through and I know it's not easy, but it will get better.

Please keep us updated as to how you're feeling. Good luck

Wow, am I glad I found this site! Thank you all so much for your replies. A couple of things:

This was not self pay, insurance is picking it up.

I beleieve my band has a 10cc capacity, and the Fluid they took out was just what came with it. Not positive on that, but its what I recall.

Nothin, and I mean nothing is going through my stomach. Not to be indelicate, but I am vomiting up saliva, and the remnants of my barium from the upper GI yesterday. Right now I only dream of Water splashing its way through my stomach unobstructed.

Finally, I'm with you Cindylou, I am not ready to go back to surgery, and will try to wait it out. I am 40yo, and this is the first surgery I have ever had. It really made me nervous, and took a while to get my courage up. I asked the doc about about a steriod to reduce the swelling, and he said he would put the order in for some. I'll let you know how it goes.

Finally, thnks for your kind words. This is pretty miserable, and its nice to have some words of encouragement.

Good Luck to us all!

The band doesn't come with Fluid in it, so your doctor must have put it in. It isn't very common to do so exactly because of this! There is almost always pre-op swelling internally and your body needs to heal. I am glad your insurance covered the operation and hopefully they will cover any complications if things don't get better soon. I sincerely hope the unfill works and you will be on the road to recovery and weight loss soon.

One of the girls banded with me in Tijuana could not get Soup down when we got to the Hotel Lucerna. They did a barium swallow and I think she had the same issue as you. However, the swelling did go down and I think she has done the best with her weight loss of all of us banded that day. So there is HOPE.

I had the exact same problems. Was banded on 5-4 and did not eat or drink until 5-10. Was put on steriods and tagamet and it did help but I have found only your body's healing will truly help. Look at it this way, it's a quick way to get started. With my pre op diet and the complications I have lost 48 pounds! Keep your chin up because it WILL get better.

Well......Great progress here! Friday morning I had the band replaced with a new one since nothing was getting through. It is impossible to tell you all how much better I feel with a functioning body again! I admit I was feeling pretty discouraged this week. But now I can actually swallow liquids! chicken broth has never tasted better! I feel like a new man!

Surgery went very well, and I was discharged last night when I could prove to the nurses that I could swallow liquids. I am sitting at home 24 hours after surgery, and can't believe what a difference a day makes.

I wanted to say thank you to everyone who replied to my posting. I was very fortunate to find this community. Healthcare is a very interactive process when you are armed with information, and the first hand stories I got from this page and relayed to my doctor were immensely helpful. Keep up the good work everyone. I look forward to repaying my debt to some future user.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
