Post op diet and amount

Recommended Posts

I am sure this subject has been covered in the past but:

What were you eating a month after surgery and how much? Two months? etc?

I am on shredded chicken now, but I can't eat much at all.

I was on liquids for a month after surgery, plus two weeks pre op. So it was liquids for 6 weeks. That being said, I am now 2.5 months out and can eat basically anything. I haven't had a problem with anything I've put in my mouth. I generally eat anywhere from 3-5 bites and am full, sometimes less depending upon how heavy or dense what I am eating is. But if I eat more than 5 bites, I'm generally sick as a dog. I tend to cook/order things that are easily re-heated; I learned early on that ordering a $9 salad at a restaurant wasn't going to work well for me because they don't keep well for days in the fridge. I eat chicken, tuna, and on occasion a few bites of steak, and also seafood. eggs are good, as are veggies (if you have any room - I generally don't. Thank God for vitamins!). When you get further out, try googling bariatric friendly recipes - there are many blogs that I've used ???? I work out probably 3 times a week (trying to up that to every day), get about 45-60 oz of Water a day (they say 80 oz but I really struggle with that much!) and 40-50 g of Protein a day. I'm down 60 lbs and 2.5 months out. Good luck, hope this helps!

I am 4wks post and i had 6 med shrimps chopped up and went down ok. Took forever, a good hour?

I went out to dinner to panera and got small cup of turkey chili. Ate half and sat well. That took an hour also.

My 9yo wanted to eat at Olive Garden last night for his birthday, so after a couple of hours bowling (something we rarely do but probably should more often as the kids enjoy it) we headed over.

The wait was 1-1.5 hours. Ugh. I didn't eat at the bowling alley and now I was going to wait another 1.5 hours to eat. It sucked, but I made it. My wife mentioned that from now on we should pack a small cooler for me with food to eat so we never find ourselves in this situation again. 2.5 weeks after surgery, this was my first day like this so it became a valuable lesson.

I ordered the chicken Abruzzi which was really, really good. Grilled chicken strips over a bed of kale (which I'm not allowed yet, so I picked out), zucchini, cannellini Beans, green peppers (see kale), and squash. It came with Soup or salad, so I went with the Pasta fagioli and enjoyed the broth, Beans, and some of the ground beef (sadly omitting the forbidden for now carrots, tomatoes, and more).

It took me about an hour to eat 3-4 of those strips, being sure to chew it to an applesauce consistency, but it was fantastic and I've got leftovers to enjoy for the next few days. Those little yellow things in the picture are not corn (as I thought when I started to eat) but yellow squash cut up extremely small. Not allowed corn and it was nice having the veggies chopped so small.

I had my sleeve on Oct 14. Up until about 2 weeks ago (3 months post op), I felt like I couldn't eat more than 3-4 bites of anything and I was full, sliming, throwing up. I feel like I have finally turned the corner and can have a small, but normal meal. I have even dined out a couple of times and been able to order a small entrée or an appetizer, and eat a decent amount of it vs taking it all home in a to-go box. My normal routine:

Breakfast: 1/2piece of toast with 1/2 yogurt

Lunch: small sandwich, piece of fruit

Dinner: usually some sort of meat (palm sized portion) and 1/2 baked potato or about that much

In between meals....lots of Water, Water, water.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
