Cheating on pre op?

Recommended Posts

Yep, I cheated too. The pre-op diet was the hardest part of this whole "adventure" for me. But it was worth every minute. I didn't really believe that WLS was going to let me lose the weight. And I was just chasing another weight loss dream.

If I had only known it would all be worth it in the end, it would have really helped me stick to the pre-op diet. So I'm tell YOU, stick with your pre-op diet, it will be sooooo worth it!!

Here's a chance for you to get back on track. No matter how tough it's been, you must keep going. If you stumble, get back up. NEVER quit. Stay consistent, persist and persevere. Look long-term, not to just tomorrow. You can do it. Keep at it.

I would never condone "cheating " but I will say with all the foods you could have chosen to "cheat" with, your choice was pretty darn awesome.

Call your doctor ans ask if you can supplement with some foods. I was doing martial arts during my month long liquid + 1 meal a day diet. My training was hard and i didn't have the energy. I was allowed to add an extra Protein and a measured amount of complex carbs.

Like @@LipstickLady, I was exercising alot pre-op and was feeling a bit drained and added some egg whites and tofu to my broth for a few days, but went back to Clear liquids for surgery. I did let my nutritionist and surgeon know and it was okay, but they preferred I cut the exercise a bit and try to stick with the diet.

The pre-op diet really was confidence builder, totally reset my palate, and I lost 25lbs! My sleep apnea was actually cured before surgery. The two weeks of liquids post-surgery was a snap. I wasn't the least bit hungry.

Best of luck to you!

I have cheated more than I would like to admit. I've mostly done right, 3 shakes a day and around 50oz of Water (they count the shakes in my liquids) but that one meal sometimes isn't within the guidelines (4oz lean meat, 2 cups veggies). I have decided that for this last 7 days, I am going to try to do all shakes and water, maybe a pickle (because I am allowed those for snack and they are delish!!) I pray my liver shrinks enough!

This is exactly how I feel st the moment. I keep suffering from the thought that I will never lose the weight. I have a month until my surgery. I need to get my head on straight.

Day 1 and I'm craving a crunch of something. I had 3 shakes, tons of Water, some spinach (plain), and 1 cup of minestrone Soup (allowed on my diet). How many more days?!?!

I lost too much weight and the doctor took me off of the pre-op diet the week before my surgery. He said the surgery went really well and my liver looked fine and I had some really crappy stuff to try to gain a couple pounds back. Good luck to you!

I can't have a BMI less than 35 and over the six-month diet I lost 20 pounds and then on the first week of the shrinking diet I lost 11 pounds that's when he took me off of it. Believe it or not after jumping through hoops and trying to gain back a couple pounds last week they didn't even weigh me yesterday morning before the surgery.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
