VSG Veterans - Do You Get Sick More Often Now?

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved on 10/31/14. All is going well, so far. But I seem to be getting sick, again. This is the second time in two months. Nothing serious, just cold / sinus infection. But I was wondering if I wasn't getting the appropriate nutrition to fight it off, or something. I usually get sick about once per winter season. I take my Vitamins and eat right, so I'm not sure why I'd be more susceptible.

Do you find that you get sick more often? Is this just a fluke?

Maybe sounds like a fluke. Or maybe your immune system is a bit stressed temporarily as you are still recovering from surgery. I was sleeved 12/20/13 and I developed a bad C. diff infection 2 months later from a dental procedure and antibiotics. Since getting over that I haven't been sick a single day. In fact, I've gotta think my immune system is stronger than ever since I finally cleared the HPV virus I've had for at least 8 years.

Hopefully, once you get back to normal, you will be healthier than ever. And don't forget to get regular bloodwork, including Vitamin and mineral assays because there really isn't a one size fits all supplement regimen.

I was sleeved in August 2014. I caught a terrible cold Thanksgiving weekend (at a staycation at a beautiful hotel / spa). Lasted almost 3 weeks. Sucked.

But that's the only thing I've dealt with.

I was sleeved 09/18/14. This week I caught a very mild case of the flu or whatever bug is going around. Felt like total crap for 2 - 3 days but I feel much better today and tomorrow I plan to get back in the gym. However, it appears to have put my chronic uterica into remission. I used to break out at least once a week. I have not had an allergy attack in the 4 months that I have been sleeved. I still have to use ZyrtecD for my sinuses, but overall my health has greatly improved.

I still average about one good cold a year. I also had the flu this year, which was a blast, but I skipped my usual sinus infection so it still works out to being sick for about 5 days out of the year, generally around the same time. I'm 16 months out now and have had the flu once and a sinus infection literally a few days before I had my sleeve surgery, but that's about it.

Hope you feel better soon!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Anyone had the TORe procedure? How did it go? How much weight did you loose?

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
