What's the real deal with soda?

Recommended Posts

Say you let the stomach fully recover. Can you drink a soda again? Obviously, you wanna stay away from it because it's just unhealthy in general, and it will expand the stomach with bubbles, but what about later on? Can you still have an occasional soda or will it screw you up bad?

I'm talking about Coca-Cola and stuff, not diet sodas. My doctor never said that I'm completely done with sodas, but to stay away from them for the time being, so I'm curious.

@@Anthony DeCastro It's not the best idea but people do still drink some. I've heard people wait until the soda is flat and drink it. Sorry I'm not much help I've never been a soda drinker.

Hi. My WLS told me that nothing ruins a sleeve faster than soda and it is indeed a "FOREVER" thing, diet or not. So I am going cold turkey on that.

I can't even fathom the idea of wanting to drink soda. The carbonation alone would give horrendous gas pains. I'm 4 months out and don't even miss it. But, I never was a big pop drinker. Just knowing the pain and amount of gas it would cause, I steer clear of anything that fizzes.

At a year out, I don't miss it. I was drinking two litres a day. Soda had control of me, and my new tummy can't handle that volume any more. If I started back on it, I would not be drinking Water at all. I was just reading today that a 20 ounce bottle of soda has 16 TEASPOONS of sugar in it.

My instructions are to never again have anything with bubbles, and if I whiz my shake in a blender, I have to wait for the bubbles to break before drinking it.

Sometimes I drink drink diet Sprite or Miller Lite beer. I drink it really, really, really slow. I switched to Crystal Light, so I don't drink carbonated beverages on a regular basis. You will have to experiment to find out how much you can safely drink before needing to stop. I found it is really easy to drink too fast and the carbonation leaves me feeling very uncomfortable.

ATM I'm getting this with just plain Water. I can't even fathom drinking soda fast at my stage. I guess I'll wait, drink slow if I ever have one, and just be careful of what I consume. Thanks, guys!

You can try it (soda) and see how it goes. Personally, I can tolerate everything except carbonated beverages. The bubbles just don't sit right. I've even tried pouring it over ice and letting it sit. By the time it was flat enough to tolerate, it didn't taste good.

As for alcohol, I have had everything from wine to bloody Mary's, to vodka cocktails to whiskey shots. I don't notice that it affects me any differently, but if I drink more than 1 or 2 at a time or more than 2 days in a row I do get gastritis. And although I used to be a pretty heavy drinker, it just doesn't appeal to me anymore. Not worth the empty calories and tummy ache. (Funny, since I was willing to tolerate wicked hangovers before)

Well, let's see.

Doctor did surgery on your stomach not your Brain. If you want to drink the soda (lots of sugar), then go to it. Coke, why Coke? It can clear up blood on cement, just imagine what it does to your new stomach. Actually any soda (sugar-free or not) is not good for your system anyways.

It is your choice whether to drink it or not.....we can only give advice.

Annamarie.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
