I had mine done on 12/19/14 and my wife had hers on 12/26/14. Our surgeon does them on everyone. Just a way to drain the fuild that builds up after surgery and to keep an eye out for any signs of leaks or infection. Niether of us had a problem with the JP drain. Only nuisance to me was having to keep asking the nurse for a safety pin to keep it up for when i went walking or to the bathroom.

It did not hurt coming out, but i prepared for it. Not sure the rules in the hospital that you are going to, but mine would not release you for an hour after receiving pain meds. Sooo, i timed it right and got some before they did all that. Also for the ride home, roads here are a bit bumpy.

You will do great!!

I had a drain and a catheter. They took my cath out at 4am the morning after surgery. They removed my drain before I left the hospital, was the weirdest feeling ever coming out. Felt like a worm coming out...weird feeling but didn't hurt!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
