Cancelled Surgery

Recommended Posts

9 days into my pre-op, (14days required) I cancelled my surgery today, I found out this weekend my support system was NOT supporting my decision to have surgery wholeheartedly. I will try to lose the weight on my own again. wish me luck! Thanks for all the support on BariatricPal. Goodbye.

@@ojibway,

My surgery is/was scheduled for January 19th. I'm calling Dr.'s today to cancel/post-pone. I discovered this website a week or two ago. Very motivational in the beginning but read a few posts last week that scared me half to death. I too am going to try and do it again on my own first. I think I may actually schedule a few follow-up visits wtih the psychologist I had to see prior to insurance approval. Yes you need to do it for you, but all along my surgeon's office stressed the importane of a support person. You have to have support to be successful in my opinion. Best of luck to you and your journey!

cancelled surgery

@@ojibway

congrats on losing 30 lbs :)

many people do get cold feet a few weeks before surgery

you are not alone

some do cancel/post-pone surgery

some people end up rescheduling and are happy they had the surgery

support or no support, you must feel ready/confident to go ahead with surgery

it can be harder not having anyone at "your back"

but people are still able to have surgery and continue on their own

remember the door is always open to come back and try again with surgery ;)

we will be here today, tomorrow and...................

good luck

kathy

happy new years :)

This is not a decision to enter into lightly it has taken me 3 or 4 years to make this decision. It shocks me that people just jump in and have this w bmi as little as 33. I didnt support my mom when she had a duodenum switch because she isnt compliant w anything ever. She went ahead and she went from close to 400 lbs to 140. She is happy thats all that matters point is if you wsnt it need it do it !

Good call to postpone. You need to be totally prepared. I wasn't and I do regret it. I would have never done it. Even with all the research in the world, you never know what it's going to be like for you...and for me it's been difficult. I'm 6 weeks post op and more depressed now, than I was about being fat. I wish I could have my pre-op life back. I made a huge mistake.

Sleeve101, I just read all your posts and learned:

* Pre-op, you were anemic (low red blood cell count), and your Mexican surgeon almost didn't do your surgery, but relented and did it anyway.

* You may not be measuring or tracking your food (although not sure about that).

* You have had a tough time emotionally post-op, but haven't yet sought medical or counseling support for your distress.

* You have federal BCBS insurance, which has pretty good insurance coverage.

I strongly encourage you to find a counselor or therapist who's familiar with bariatric patients' issues and journeys who will support you through this tough time you're having. As you know you can't get your original stomach back. So it's time to learn how you can move forward with this new lifestyle. Many, many people have done very well post-op. You can, too. You don't have to remain miserable. It's your choice.

Because I don't think I fully understood the consequences. I had a hard recovery and I can't get used to the pain that comes from just trying to eat anything other than shakes or liquids. I'm just afraid of living this way the rest of my life....I know it has to get better, but right now I just don't see the light. I am losing weight - I've lost 30 pounds since my surgery on Nov 20th, but I d take it back if I could. I think this has just gotten me really depressed, which is another thing I wasn't expecting. :-(

I'll be going to a therapist next week, nutritionist and doctor follow ups as well.

I just can't make myself be happy about this now. I have so much regret I cry a lot.

Please pray for me, I'm really struggling emotionally ans physically. :-(

Thank you VSGann2014! I appreciate your advice. I will do that, because I know I can't change what is done. I need to learn to live with the new lifestyle required. Thank you for your suggestions!

I know it has to get better...I just need to get help.

As always with this forum, you are going to experience that opinions and tact will vary, especially when a post is not all sunshine and roses. I am sad that your weight loss has become about someone else and not about your own health, happiness, and longevity. Will this person support you in other attempts? Will they go walking with you and help you pick and cook healthy foods? Or will they sabotague your efforts and bring home Krispy Creme Donuts?

I do hope that even if they don't support your decision for surgery, at least they will still have your best interest at heart and support you with encouragement and assistance.

You will find all kinds of people on this site. There are folks like me who got sleeved and had no complications and no hair loss. There are others who have had complications or lost a lot of hair. There are those who have been at death's door several times. I don't regret my surgery at all. Others wish they had never heard of it.

Since you are putting surgery on the back burner, I would like to make a couple of suggestions. One is that you come visit the forum often. You will still find good advice and support here, no matter what method you use to get healthy.

The other is to at least pick up on the basics of what our surgeons present to us for success:

Eat lean Protein and plenty of it.

Eat some non-starchy veggies daily.

Eat fresh fruit (apple, not apple pie), but not a lot.

Drink Water until your eyeballs float.

Don't become part of the couch.

I wish you the best success with your efforts. Let us know how you are doing.

???????

I'm very confused. Are you saying you cancelled your surgery because your family or friends did not want you to have it? Is this correct? Or do you mean that you were hoping that they would help pay for it and then they told you no?

I guess I'm a bit confused because I don't want the surgery based upon the opinions of my friends and family. I'm doing this for myself. Even if every single family member or friend were against this surgery I would still get it because it ultimately is about my health and my body, not theirs. Right now my sister is dead set against me having the surgery and tries to scare me by claiming she has psychic premonitions that I'm going to die and be horrible pain. So my response is to cut her out of my life until after the surgery. I don't want her negativity in my life right now. And this is sad because she needs the surgery more than I do. She thinks that she can do this on her own and now is into this crazy notion of hypnosis to make you think you have a lap band. Well, good luck to her but I'm getting the surgery.

Good luck to you but I would never cancel my surgery just because my family and friends didn't approve.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
