Down and regretful?

Recommended Posts

It's been two weeks since my surgery and I feel very lucky that I am healing fast and have had no complications. Ive been really good at sticking to my foods and portions (I'm currently still on the cottage cheese, yogurt and shake stage) and have been walking daily.

For the most part I've been positive and motivated for my healthy future, but there have been short moments where I think to myself 'man, what did I do?!' And I heard that short feeling is normal. But, for some reason I just can't shake it today!

I keep thinking about the foods I miss, and not just bad ones, healthier ones like salads, chicken and even a turkey sandwich. It sounds so silly, but I get frustrated with all the Vitamins and trying to get my Protein and Water in. I just can't stop thinking I made a drastic mistake.

Is this just a normal feeling while in the beginning?

It's common for people who are newly sleeved to imagine that their current eating situation is permanent.

It's not.

You just had major surgery. You are learning again to sip and drink and eat. You're in the newly sleeved phases -- going from liquids to purees to soft foods. You're no longer on "automatic" with regard to eating and drinking. You can't eat much. It takes a long time to eat. Eating is different and uncomfortable.

This doesn't last forever. By three months out, you'll be so much more comfortable.

Go to the Veterans Forum here and read about the lives of people who are one, two, three or more years out. They have different issues. But not the ones you're complaining about.

What you're feeling is 100% NORMAL! We all had a love of food or we wouldn't be here. Find something healthy to replace it with! For me, going back to school and staying busy has helped tremendously! I'm an emotional eater and a bored eater! When there's nothing to do, I snack! You're grieving the loss of your best friend, food! You'll learn that a LOT of your life is centered around food and it's hard to escape that fact! We have to learn to operate in this world with tiny tummies! I'm 20 months out and 144 lbs down! I'm 17lbs from goal! You can do this! Remember, the first bite tastes as good as the tenth AND Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
