Gah! When would you disclose surgery plans in hiring process?

Recommended Posts

I just had an awesome and VERY promising interview for a promotion...same employer...different division.

My surgery date is 1/15/2015. When the person giving the interview asked at the end of the interview if there was anything I wanted to tell them, I thought, gulp! should I have mentioned that I have an elective procedure scheduled for January and would need 2 weeks off (all I was planning to take at my current job).???.

Should I wait till the offer is made to disclose? Or should I request the FMLA once in the position or should I say I already have a vacation planned at the offer? I've always thought requesting FMLA is best policy but I don't won't to have that chip on my shoulder with a new employer.

It may be a moot point but they are making offers today or Monday and I don't know how to proceed.

Thoughts? Advice?

Hey! Congrats on the new job! I hope you get the position. If it were me, I would let them know up front. It's easier to take care of things on the front end than closer to the deadline. It might also make a good expression on your employer if you are honest with them up front. Or might let you know what you are up against if they are not supportive. It's all about your long term goals and where you wanna be. Good luck! Let me know how it goes.

I was in similar but different situation recently. I had my RNY in June. During my lengthy search for employment I found out I could possibly be getting a pacemaker. I had a interview at the beginning of this month and I was up front and honest with them. I told them that I may need a pacemaker and I would know more about when a few days after the interview. They hired me and I had my pacemaker implanted on the 19th of this month. My employer had no problems giving me time off or anything like that. I would be up front and honest with them.

If it's not too late, I would tell them you have a minor scheduled surgery. You don't have to tell them what kind but my advice is start out with an honest relationship. Good luck!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
