Hello everyone, I have been around a long time pondering on this forum as well as the lap band forum. I had the band removed finally and even before then my Dr. had been telling me that RNY would be my better choice. And now, I still have worsening diabetes, high B/P, cholesterol issues and taking meds for them all. I now weigh 215 and I'm 5' 2" tall. My PCP wrote me a prescription for diet pills since I still need to lose for health reasons. SHOULD I OR NOT START TAKING THE PILLS? I no longer have the band that wasn't helping anyway. Please give me your feedback (good/ or bad) My body weight isn't evenly distributed, b/c I'm much heavier from waist up and and thin legs and wrists. At this point, I really need to do this for health reasons and not looks. The pills carry a lot of side effects and slow weight loss.

I underwent RNY surgery 18 months ago. Prior to surgery I was diabetic, had high blood pressure, sleep apnea, a problem with profuse sweating and a problem with frequent urination. All these problems went into remission within 2 weeks after surgery.

I personally would not take diet pills.

pills have so many harsh side effects. IMO, the roux n y would be very appropriate to help with weight loss and your medical issues.

I have permanent stomach issues after taking diet pills, specifically, phendimetrazine. I was on them for just about 2 years. I wouldn't take them again.

Thanks James, I sworn to my self that I would never take another diet pill. This particular Dr. seems to be shying away from RNY. He was pleased that I had the band removed

The bad reaction that I had came from xenical that was prescribed by my Dr. one week later I had to go to the ER and was put on a heart monitor. I'm just afraid of them.

I sometimes wonder if these doctors are promoting these experimental drugs for a fee. I think diet pills carry more side effects than having RNY. At least from what I"ve read. I'm beginning to weigh out the options on the side effects between both. I know RNY would help with my medical issues, and I feel stupid to still be pondering over this.

I went to one of those medically supervised weight loss doctors and that's when they started me on those pills. I ended up losing a lot of weight, probably 60 lbs and I was lighter back then when I started than I am now. I wish I would have spent my time back then trying to get my RNY instead. As soon as I stopped the pills the weight came back on, plus another 30 lbs. I've gone up and down the same 20-30 lbs since then but with no success of keeping it off.

I had some bad side effects with my stomach from the actual diet pills and developed an allergy to splenda along the way, I was consuming it daily back when I was seeing the "doctor". Funny enough, I never even met that doctor whose care I was under. Things I wish I could tell my younger self: don't fall for these fad diets and don't trust a doctor you haven't met!

I've received a packet in the mail today from the diet pill manufacturer along with a daily food journal. but listening to these responses, there seem to be more side effects from taking the pill than it is with just actually having the surgery. I'm also thinking that taking the pills may be such a short term thing that they may not help with my type 2 diabetes.

@@blackonynx if you decide to give them a try, just keep track of any side effects you think you might be having and discuss them with your doctor. You just have to weigh the pros and cons but ultimately you've got to do what's best for you :)

Thanks Brandyjune. I'm thinking right now, that the side effects I had long ago were not pretty. I want to forget that experience and try again sometimes. but when I remember what I went through and how I felt, I vowed NOT ever again. So even though my PCP wants me to try them, I just don't think that I can. Besides, my WL surgeon is waiting to hear back from me. I've been approved and he's waiting on me to say the word. He removed my band 4 mos. ago. We feel that I"m healed from that. I used to worry about image and losing too much. but now it's about health.

My husband has a dear friend who was prescribed diet pills and soon after he took the pills got a stroke. He currently is in the hospital with half of his body paralyzed. He was in icu and placed in an induced coma. Don't take diet pills. They rev up metabolism and make everything go haywire. This is just a warning because I too was given diet pills and after hearing about our friend, i said forget it.

Put it this way. If your going to use Xenical, best buy some adult diapers at the same time and save yourself the trip.

Phentermine made me feel super weird. Revved up and angry and it only curbed my appetite for a few days. It doesn't work at all on emotional hunger or habits. Also I became pregnant while on it and it was a tubal ectopic pregnancy. I feel the drug had something to do with this happening.

Very dangerous to take.

I would try and lose weight through diet and ex before anything else.

Thanks guys, I keep forgetting about the way they made me feel b/c I still need to lose 65 lbs. Thanks for reminding me about something that I swore never to do again. @bellabloom~ Xenical was the drug that made me swear never again. I was sick and had a nerve problem for weeks. I'm afraid that this pill may too. My electrolytes were thrown off and I couldn't lay down to sleep at night. I think I'll just go ahead and call my surgeon.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
