How long did it take you to get approved?

Recommended Posts

Hello all-Newbie here!

I was wondering how long it took for you to get a surgery date after your initial consultation. My insurance is terrible (its student insurance, and covers nothing), and so I will be self-pay. Since I won't have to go through an insurance rigamarole, I'm wondering how long this process will take.

My consultation is scheduled for December 12th. I'm both nervous and excited. I want to get an idea of whether I'm looking at this happening in 7 months or 1/2-I really have no frame of reference!

Thank you! :-)

Approval is insurance related so you will probably have almost no wait. I have insurance and first consult was in September and surgery was in March.

I was self-pay. It really depends on the surgeon. Mine had things he still required so I had to get in to do those things and then find a date that he had available to do the surgery. From visit to surgery was about 2 months.

I am self pay as well. My initial consult was on a Monday and I was approved 3 days later.

Forgot to mention that my surgery was scheduled a week after my approval because I only had to do 1 week pre-op diet. Usually they have you do two weeks.

2 months. I had my surgery 3 months almost to the date of my initial consult. I also work at and have insurance through the hospital it was performed at. The doctor is one of our attendings, I'm sure that had something to do with the easy process.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
