Starting pre-op Liquid Diet

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I have been looking for a way to start shareing my journey. I am scheduled for the sleeve on November 17th. I start my liquid pre-op diet tomorrow. I am nervous and scared. Not about going through the procedure. I am nervous that I won't be successful. over the past 10 years, have been on several diets, worked with 5 different private trainers, tried several different styles of workouts. I work hard, I eat well, but the weight just doesn't come off. After getting injured at crossfit last spring and getting shoulder surgurey, I decided that I needed some extra help. I know a few folks who have been successful with the sleeve. I am just nervous. However, I am excited to start seeing some results. That is always the hard part after 6 months or more of a progam to get on the scale and not see results. It is so discouraging. I won't say that my trainers gave up on me. However, I got tired of that look in their eye, like I wasn't working hard enough.

So, here I go. I am 44, 6'2" and 312 lbs. Any tips on the pre-op diet? I have a feeling, I may be pretty grumpy for a while.:)

I can't give you any tips because I haven't started yet, but I will be at the beginning of Dec. preparing for my 12/18 surgery, just a month behind you. I am not looking forward to the 2 week pre op diet, but I know that if I can get through that I can handle anything lol. I would suggest getting yourself a journal and be prepared to write down what you're feeling. I am also about to start a good book that I've been hearing a lot about called The Emotional First Aid Kit by Cynthia Alexander.

@ Hi! I am on my last day of liquids today (surgery in the am) I don't know what your surgeons requirements are for liquids but I had broth, My tip for that would be check out the Swanson broths they have a bunch of different flavors that I wasn't aware of until this like Thai ginger, Mexican, hot n sour ect...they really helped I also added a little bit of plain chicken broth to them because they can be a little strong, spicy. I used the Premier Protein ready made shakes in chocolate, strawberry, & vanilla. I really like them. I was allowed sugar free jello(I think Kool-aid brand is my favorite) also sugar free Popsicles I couldn't find any I could stand so I got molds and made my own out of the Syntrax fuzzy naval Protein mix. You can also use whatever Protein Drink you will be having. I was also allowed a couple pickles a day but I never did use them. Just make sure you don't go to long without a shake . Try to not watch food commercial or mute the tv if that bothers you....it does me. I didn't find it hard at all and I never cheated. Good luck to you! Just keep your eye on the prize! It will be over before you know it

I swear I posted this same thing a couple of days ago. I'm on the 17th also and not particularly worried about the surgery, just about succeeding after failing so many times. I just started my pre-op yesterday and so far I have been able to handle it. My friend who was sleeved in July said jus keep thinking that there is a time limit on this diet. I'm going to take her advice and mark off the days on my calendar one at a time. Prayers up for you and keep us posted.

@@Elode, good luck to you! How exciting. Thank you so much for your advice. @@haleytrim and @@bobbyswife, Today, I am actually doing very well. I didn't realize how saturated I have felt for the last few weeks. So, cleansing on liquids will be very good for me. We can do this. So glad that others have the same feelings as me.

I'm schedule for 11/10/14 and have just started the "clear" liquids diet. I do not like this Swanson chicken broth. I guess I'll eat Jello and popsicles this week.

I just started the pre-op on Saturday. The doc gave me a set of "Health Wise" foods that are not too great as far as taste is concerned, but I'm down a couple of pounds already, so I really can't complain. Surgery is on the 11th, and I have to say that reading the experiences of everyone on this site has been an inspiration. You all have me looking forward to the procedure and the new life to come!

@@MrsMike1, I don't like the chicken broth either. But it was kindof satisfying at lunch.

@@haleytrim, I'm doing fine. At work it is easy to focus on other things. Don't feel super hungry. How are you? I need to print out a calendar so I can cross out days.

I would suggest those Bouillon cubes. They taste so much better than other broths. They helped me survive the liquid diet.

FYI I had my surgery on 11/10/14, Down 4lbs.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
