Hypothyroid, 32 BMI, Years of Stuggling... do you have similar story?

Recommended Posts

I'm considering the sleeve. Has your hypothyroidism (Hashimoto's Disease) impacted your sleeve success? Simply put, I can lose the weight; I cannot keep it off. Since I have a thyroid disease, will it be possible for me to get to my ideal (140lbs) and stay? I have gotten close with phentermine and other diets, but I always gain it back. I am so very tired of it. I want permanent accountability. I want to be thin and healthy.

Please let me know your journey with hypothyroidism and the sleeve... good or bad.

Thank you.

I have hashimotos also but I started at a BMI of 55 (gasp) as of last October when I went to the sleeve seminar. As of 2 weeks ago my BMI is 35. I lost 34 lbs. on my own waiting for surgery and have lost over 90 lbs since then (March 2014) for a total of 127 lbs lost in a year. It isn't always easy and I can't say I would have ever considered this surgery with a BMI as low as yours but to each his own. My doctor (not my sleeve surgeon, my family dr) did say if probably would need less calories than typical because of my thyroid.

I have hashimoto's and am doing well so far! Still worried about maintenance, but certainly that will be easier with the sleeve than without!

What kind of medication are you taking for your hypothyroidism? I've done well with Armour Thyroid, but I still need a lower calorie intake to lose weight. I am hoping my thyroid improves as I lose weight. You might try a medication or dosage change before doing something so drastic like surgery.

I have taken synthroid and cytomel (varying doses) for years. I am currently going to get a second opinion on Rx... having all my blood labs done (thyroid and hormone blood work). I am so frustrated and really want to get control of my health. I certainly would love to try the natural armour... have heard of success with armour. Thank you for all your input. I appreciate it.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
