did I just ruin my chances?

I had my psych eval on Monday and without realizing that she was asking these questions for a reason. She asked if I get lower back pain? And joint pain and how I am with stairs? Well...stupid me, I Dont get back pain and I Dont really get winded on stairs. And its hard to determine if all my joint pain is from my rheumatoid arthritis or the weight on top of it. I did tell her that I can't squat though! I realized now that she was kinda helping me out saying...well, you prob would be a little better w/o the extra weight and so on. So...I'm wondering if she's going to put in the report that I can still do that stuff and the insurance will see it and deny it?!?!

No, could be that she wants to gage your ability to workout post surgery so that she understands your commitment level. Such as the likelihood of you working out after you go through with the surgery. Don't get yourself worked up and read into it. I looked at the Psych eval as a block checker. At one point I think I asked the guy if I could just write him the check for the co-pay, allow him to bill my insurance company and he contemplated it.

I really don't think you blew anything. The purpose of the psych eval is not to determine if you need the surgery or if you have co-morbidities. She is there to see if you know what you're getting into and are psychologically able to handle all of the changes and challenges that come with it.

As long as you meet your insurance companies requirements ie 40 or greater BMI or 35 with comorbidity(ies) you should be fine. I think they just use the psyche to rule out the people that they think will have high rate of failure due to not following protocol or doing WLS for the wrong reasons. That's just my opinion though. I think you probably did just fine :)

When I went to my Shrink's appointment I put the cards on the table before we even got started.

I told him, " I'm paying you for this session so that I can get my sleeve surgery. If you have any reservations or considerations that would cause you to not recommend me for the surgery.... tell me now and I will cancel the appointment and go elsewhere. - I AM GETTING THIS SURGERY!! So tell me what you need to approve this and let's wrap this up. Do we understand each other.? "

He said no problem and we continued with the session and all went well. Not that I suggest anyone else should do this.....just saying nothing was going to stop me, especially someone I am paying. ;)

I don't think you blew it, I was overweight but had no other health concerns and I was approved. I had high cholesterol but hadn't been tested in years...other than that it was just weight. I could do all the other things you mentioned without being winded. You will be fine.

...as my (bariatric) therapist likes to say...just BREATHE... it'll be ok...

we get ourselves stressed out for nothing...it's best to be honest anyway...I'm sure, like everyone else, that it will be just fine!

Let us know when you get approved!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
