Failing already!

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery on the 12th of August so pretty much 2 months now. I'm down 34lbs from my highest weight.

This is really horrible and I'm ashamed but I have fallen back into old eating habits already. I thought I was ready for this surgery emotionally but I was not. I am working on my food addiction and changing eating habits (starting anti-inflammatory diet.) I have major health issues which are not weight related that I deal with on a daily basis.

My worry now is that I have caused a leak from eating bad stuff and over eating sometimes. I'm so scared but don't have any symptoms right now. Should I call my surgeon and ask for tests????? Oh I also have had crazy acid reflux since surgery which I did not have before. I really don't know what to do, I feel like such a failure!!!!!

Sorry you are going through this struggle. Yes, schedule a visit with your surgeon. You need an intervention and sooner than later. Your surgeon don't want you to fail. Your success is also their success. Best.

You should also schedule a visit or two with your clinic's psych for some one on one sessions as well. It is hard to manage a food addiction and the psych your surgeon uses is well versed in eating disorders/food addictions and can help you.

You haven't and aren't failing - this is just a small blip. You will and can succeed and get past this. Tomorrow is a new day remember...

Are you taking acid reflux meds? I'm almost 6 months out and if I dont take it, I get pretty hungry (not like before but hungry). Yes, you should contact your surgeon , it is dangerous and can give you serious problems (life-threatening, even) if you don't get help. Yes, yes, yes call surgeon and his/her team.

I took Prilosec at first and I still was feeling really hungry. When I switched to Nexium , it helped tremendously. All antacids are not created equal and some just work better. It couldn't hurt to change it up. Good luck.

Don't punish yourself Hun, you are doing brilliantly well. We all have the odd blip, and feel like we've over eaten. It all takes a bit of getting use to. X

You are not failing! You are realizing that your problems with food go deeper than liking how food tastes, and you're realizing that you weren't quite prepared for the emotional side of it. I definitely wasn't prepared for all of that either. I have been working with an eating disorder therapist for several months now and I would HIGHLY recommend it. I also would recommend the book "When Food Is Love". Pick this up as soon as you can! Physically, it wouldn't hurt to touch base with your surgeon, and it probably wouldn't hurt to do a "re-set" of sorts and maybe go back to the pre-op or right after surgery post-op liquid Proteins diet to clear everything out, give your sleeve a little chance to rest, and break your habits that you've slid back in to. Don't get discouraged! Acknowledging the struggle is the first step to overcoming it~!

You have definitely not failed! Start today doing what you know you are suppose to do. & get some help for the emotional part. I have decided it's probably 90% mental. You have to get your head in the right place. Best of luck to you.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
