How do you know or keep track of your protein when you're not even eating half a serving?

Recommended Posts

I'm in the puréed or soft food stage. I eat about 1/3 maybe even 1/4 a serving. How do I even keep track of what I'm eating or does it matter so much at this stage??

I used MyFitnessPal for the entirety of the last year following sleeve surgery. It lets you manipulate the serving size, so if you're only eating even just 1/8 of a serving you can track your calories. I'm 13 months out from surgery and I rarely eat an entire serving of something, so the app is an easy way to track calories.

I do the same thing with MyFitnessPal. It keeps me honest with what I am actually eating. I was amazed at how much food info there is in this app. I transfer this info into my DietMinder book that I got from Amazon. This allows me to add up the carbs & Protein I have eaten for the day. There is even a place you can keep track of your liquid/water.

Ditto others -- if I plan to eat 4 ounces of something, but eat only 2 ounces, I adjust on MFP the portion size down to 2 ounces (or 0.5 of the 4 ounce serving).

It's simple.

Are you adding in unflavored Protein powder to your pureed foods?

I only add unflavored protein if I'm eating something like pudding or canned Soup, but I'm passed that stage really. I cook real protein and blend instead.

Past that stage..... cute..... :P You're gonna need all the protein you can get in to avoid muscle loss and maintain energy. Sure, eat as much protein as you can in food, but supplements are very necessary. Always. ;)

I also use MFP to help calculate my Protein intake.

I drink one shake a day so I know for a fact I am getting in at least 30....In my early stage first 1-2 mo I drank 2 shakes to make sure I got 60 grams in.

I know most of the time if I eat something its never the full or even 1/2 the serving

Good luck

Your Protein should come from healthy, lean meats and other items. You're right about that. But if you are unsure, 1 scoop of unflavored can ensure that you have maximized your daily requirement.

MyFitnessPal and CalorieKing.com. The app for CalorieKing is a little easier to do a quick check before you eat something but I like to log on to MFP to log my daily intake. Problem for me is I cannot remember to log it in every day.

BTW, my MFP name is papamick48.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
