Possible Ulcer?

Recommended Posts

I will be 2 years post op next January and I have been having some unusual symptoms:

*Bloating

*Wake up with nausea

*A dull but constant pain in my stomach (feels like hunger pain)

*Pain radiates to my back sometimes

Went to GP and he ordered blood work to check liver function and h.pylori...so far everything normal. .I have upcoming ultrasound to check liver and gallbladder. ..I am wondering if this is the route he should take rather than just make sure I have no ulcers or something wrong with pouch....???

My guess would be gallbladder, not ulcer. But for what the google MD's are worth..... Make an appt with your surgeon.

My guess is gallbladder & you can also feel like your having a heart attack from chest pressure thats part of gallbladder attack..have your dr or gallbladder ultrasound.

Could it be acid? With doctor approval, of course, try a 7 day anti-acid course. With a prescription grade medicine or Prilosec - OTC like meds.

I am pre-surgery but over the years I have suffered from exactly the same symptoms you state. Mine get a little better throughout the day. It seems worst when I wake up. The bloating is the worst. I was told by my GP to do the Prilosec and it always works after a few days. I have always wondered if I have a food allergy.

He ordered Prilosec for me should be getting that soon....could be acid since I did suffer from it prior to gastric bypass. ..but I read it can cause ulcers in pouch :/

Great! Correct on the ulcers, but acid is manageable with Prilosec. You just have to be on top of things. As a complication at this point, this is an easier one, especially since you know before hand you have a tendency to acidity. I do too, oh well! I like to think I am just super efficient at cracking every molecule of nutrition. In a famine I would be set, unfortunately I live in abundance, thus I have obesity. Not fair, lol

I had my gallbladder out at one year post op and those were my symptoms.

Healthiertoday1227, did you also have gallbladder attacks. I have been told they are very painful. My symptoms are somewhat mild but now I am wondering if it's not the gallbladder after all. How did your doctor determine it was gallbladder?

Beni, yes I had attacks. At 6 months out my stomach hurt so bad I went to the ER. They gave me a GI cocktail which really helped and put me on Pepcid AC, saying it was gerd. They didn't run any tests. A few months later the pain came back and it radiated to my back. I saw my surgeon and he even asked if I still had my gallbladder but ordered no tests. So finally at a year out the pain was incredibly bad and I had to leave work. I went back to the ER and this time they ordered blood tests and an ultrasound. They said it showed I had multiple large stones and they admitted me. Then they did an MRI to make sure the stones had not traveled into the bile duct. The surgery was easy, recovery similar to sleeve except without all the gas or food issues. One thing to watch out for is if the pain worsens when you eat. And it is kind of a gnawing pain, similar to hunger but painful. Good luck!

Thank you so much.

I used to wake up everyday with a tummy pain. My GP wrote a scrip for a gallbladder function test last year and also told me to do a Prilosec twice per day for a month. Because the Prilosec worked I never did do the test. It was kind of expensive. I have never had an big attack. But I do get tummy pain around my middle/waist and I always wonder if my pants were too tight the day before. NO. Also, I get big time bloating but I never know when it will happen or why.

You ER experience is just like the ones I have had. They are worthless. In our family, we have had 4 trips to the ER and each and every time it was a: they don't know what's wrong.

I am glad your doctor figured it out.

Beni that's where my pain was, around the middle. I don't remember having bloating though. The ER goal is simply pain management they just want to throw pain killers at you and call it a day. Hope they figure out what's going on with you.

Thanks ladies...I woke up feeling a lil better today but I've noticed I am not eating as much as I should be for fear of pain. Not good ! I know....hopefully after I have ultrasound I can know for sure if it's gallstones or something else...so far I started taking Prilosec ...let's see how that helps. ..will keep you posted :)

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
