Does neuropathy get better after weight loss?

Recommended Posts

I'll be getting sleeved in November and it can't come too soon. Lately I've been having increasingly worse nerve pain in my feet and I think it may be a sign or a result of diabetes. I have never been diagnosed with it but when my last blood work came back a couple months ago my doc warned me about being close to being diabetic.

Has anyone here had neuropathy type pains that got better after surgery and major weight loss? I'm really hoping my upcoming surgery and weight loss is going to fix it.

Nope. I am nine months post-op and down 65 pounds. I have several neuropathies due to a 14 herniated discs, and I have had three others repaired. My spine surgeon said that he wanted to see if losing weight would take some pressure off of my vertibrae. It has not yet, but he is still optimistic about it if I can lose another 40 pounds. If it does not improve after that, then I will have a second spinal repair and get a full lumbar fusion (the one with anterior, posterior and lateral incisions and rods and screws). So, yeah, I am with you in hoping that losing weight will improve neuropathies. I do feel better in other ways; enough to keep hope alive.

I have numbness and burning pain in my feet due to type 1 diabetes. I have been told it will get better if I loose weight and fix my posture. So far with this diet I can move my toes a lot better so I'm hoping if I loose most of my excess weight it will get better.

If your nerve pain is connected to diabetes, based on what I was told during seminar you have a good shot at eliminating it. Wifey is getting sleeved October 28 & her last blood work showed A1C was an 8..which makes her now diabetic. We are looking for the weight loss to lower her levels and surgeon seems pretty confident this will happen. Never a guarantee of course, but lots of history of diabetes disappearing after weight loss. Hoping the best for you too Mike.

I have neuropathy for no known reason. Never been diabetic, no back problems, no liver disease, none of the things that are known to cause it. I had hoped losing weight would help me, but it didn't. Might be different for others, depending on the cause.

Sometimes it can be caused by pinched nerves I know one reason is diabetics for me also pinched a nerve between my rips and hip. If I lost weight it can help lessen. Just by dieting ATM my feet have been feeling so much better besides at night time ????

I'll also suggest have you ever tried laser acupuncture I did for a few weeks first time I had no numbness or pain for weeks.

I may look into that, thanks.

Just a quick update on this:

I decided on a hunch to stop using the topical testosterone (Axiron) my family doctor has been giving me to see if it would change anything with the pain in my feet. After about a week the neuropathy is almost gone completely so I'm pretty sure I found my culprit.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
