Feeling discouraged..

Recommended Posts

Today I had my second supervised appointment with my doctor and per their scale I have lost 4 pounds in a month. However on my scale at home I am down 9.5 pounds. I am frustrated at this since my surgeon reviews the weight sent in from my doctor. I don't weigh my self naked so I know it is not clothes weight.

I have been doing high Protein low carb, I track everything and exercising everyday.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH....

I have to lose 28 pounds before surgery and I am feeling very discouraged. Anyone else have this problem?

Thanks for listening!

oh boy, do i. according to my scale, i was down 10 lbs at my second weigh in, but according to theirs i hadn't lost an ounce since my first weigh in (when i lost 5.6). they were not very supportive and i felt kind of almost threatened that i wouldn't have the surgery. my final weigh in is TODAY and i'm so unsure about what they will find. i'm wearing my lightest outfit, and i've hardly eaten in two days lol.

however. i called my insurance carrier and asked them for their requirements, and it turns out that as far as they're concerned, i only have to show no gain during my three month period. so i'm kind of not so worried as i was.

i would suggest you do the same, and make sure you understand what are the requirements for your insurer, and what are your surgeon's personal requirements. it may make a difference to the way you feel too.

Thanks for your reply! My insurance is the same as yours however my surgeon requires a 10% weight loss to have the surgery done. He feels that you need to show the commitment before surgery. I just emailed his office to see if they have any suggestions on what I should do.

wow, 10% is harsh! my surgeon just says 5%. i mean, i understand them wanting to see us really try, but i can't understand withholding surgery from someone because they can't do what they've been trying to do their whole life! i actually ambushed the surgeon's practice manager after she did one of the monthly support group meetings and told her how discouraged i was after my second weigh in, and she comforted me and told me not to worry, that as long as it is obvious that i've made an attempt (like losing half), they'll accept it. maybe your surgeon does the same thing? i'm glad you emailed them, it's good to know the "real" rules. let us know what they say!

I'm at the end of my 6 month supervised weight loss and I was supposed to be at 258 by Thursday! I lost and hovered and gained and lost during this time and I am 1.8 pounds over my target mark. I'm having to do the dieting gymnastics to get there!!! Hopefully, I won't ever have to do that again. Just keep doing what you know to do and you will get there! Good Luck!

I too had to lose 10% and it took me 7 weeks to get it done. I was beyond vigilant with my diet and drank a TON of Water daily. I haven't had any fruit since June, no bread, Cereal, or Pasta and no potatoes peas or corn. I am 1 month post op and very leery of even trying fruit and approved veggies. If you are close to the goal they set for you go online and read how athletes make weight. I had it printed and ready to go but didn't need to use it. Good luck and know it can be done. Hang in there.

I just spoke with my surgeon and he told me to just keep doing what I am doing and that he is not worried at all. He told me that he is proud of the changes I have made and knows that it will pay off.

It makes me feel a little better. :)

I will have to lose 10% but will be on the 4 week Optifast diet and they said that most end up losing more than the 10%.

I just had my office visit yesterday & my doctor didn't tell me that I had to lose a certain amount if weight. I've lost since I first started. I'm on a 2 wk liquid diet. But I just thought it was odd that he didn't tell me to lose a certain amount of weight.

I have to lose 10% pre-op too and I'm only about 7 lbs short after 2 months. Hoping to have surgery in about 6 weeks (final nut visit is on Tuesday). I'm eating high protein/low carb. I've been wondering if the 2-week liquid diet would be included in the calc or if I have to lose the full 10% before starting the liquid diet...

I'm also a 10%'er! My clinic didn't require it to show you can do it, it's for health reasons. It shrinks your liver and lowers your risk of complications during and after surgery.

I get that it's hard. I've been on mine since August 25th and wasn't as vigilant I should have been so I'm going hard core now. Just remember that there's a reason other than just proving you can do it that your surgeon asks for it.

I leave for Vegas in the morning. If I can survive three days of a girls trip (my birthday/friends bachelorette party) then I know I'm ready for this lifelong change!

Good luck to everyone and remember that no matter how hard it seems, it'll all be worth it in the end!

Adding: My dietician put me on a really strict plan that should have me losing a pound a day. As of this morning, I've lost 10 pounds since Tuesday! I have followed it to the letter.

I'm trying to make my required goal by the 15th of October so they'll schedule my surgery for the 4th of November. I have 20.7 pounds to go!

A Protein shake for Breakfast (it's got 30g Protein and only 7 carbs), no mid-morning snack because I usually have lunch 2-3 hours after Breakfast, a lean protein and veggies for lunch (no fruit, bread, rice, Pasta, or potatoes), another shake or other high protein/low carb snack (I've been having turkey and cheese roll ups), and another lean protein and veggies for dinner. No evening snack.

It's soooooo not easy but I drink lots of Water in between and chew sugar free gum to help with the urge to snack. I honestly haven't been that hungry and my meals have been real simple. I eat a lot of frozen green Beans as my veggie (I live alone, no kids) and chicken breast or tuna with only 1 tablespoon of mayo (can add mustard if you need it wetter). I use my crock pot to make the chicken a lot. Throw two breasts in with a half a jar of salsa (mango pineapple habanero is amazeballs) then eat one for dinner and the other for lunch the next day. I also bought a bag of salad and some amazing sugar free raspberry vinaigrette that I eat with a little cheese and some precooked frozen grilled chicken breast chunks. I keep it easy and simple!

Gad, I really hate to hear about these crash diets some patients are put on to lose X% of weight prior to surgery.

It seems so counterproductive to me.

I can understand, completely, the benefit of going on a 1200 calorie diet, eating good Protein and veggies, gradually exercising more and more to get you into the groove of what life post-op will be like.

But this other crash-diet crap just reinforces old, terrible behaviors.

Obviously, I'm just stating my opinion and realize that others' mileage may vary.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
