SEPTEMBER 2014 POST-OP SLEEVERS CHECKING IN!

Recommended Posts

Secrets, God bless you tomorrow! It won't be fun at all but just sip that Water and sleep all you can! sleep, sleep, sleep! Take those pain meds! You will get through it and be happy! I am down almost 30 pounds between pre op and post op. Congratulations!! :)

JCP, THANK YOU!

I am about to leave in 1/2 hour for the hospital, both frightened to the point of nausea and hoping to have the same outcome as you. I am happy for you. And your words of encouragement mean a lot to me.

I am not sure if I can post from the hospital, but I will check in with BP as soon as I return.

I was sleeved on the 15th at 5pm. I didn't get into my room until after 8pm but they did get me up and walking before I was out for the night. The next day I felt really good. I have been following the diet and walking throughout the day. Today I have walked over 4000 steps according to my fitbit. I am excited that this hasn't been as hard as I thought however, I made the mistake of getting on the scale and it's telling me that I have GAINED 7 pounds. How is this possible? Has anyone else had this problem?

Honestly, they pump us so full of fluids it's no surprise some of us "gain" weight post op. When I was being discharged the nurse literally opened up the IV line and the whole bag drained in a few minutes.

Well, tomorrow is my day - will be in surgery for my sleeve at noon. To say that I am still having second thoughts is an understatement but no matter how often I review the list of plus and minuses, the POSSIBILITY of my well controlled diabetes becoming almost no diabetes still tilts the scale to having the surgery, not to mention my sleep apnea and HBP.

Of course none of those things going away is guaranteed but I have a shot at it happening as well as the surgery helping me go the rest of the way to my weight loss.

I am tired of fighting the obesity battle, and this type will arm myself with every tool I can. I know that I will be back here tomorrow or the next day asking you all, WHY DID I DO THIS?. I am counting on you all to remind me of what I said right here tonight.

@@keepingmysecrets

Good luck! I am a week post op today (Monday) and felt the same thing pre-op! Right before I was taken to surgery, I went to the bathroom and started crying! Luckily, they gave me some really good drugs and then the walls started moving some lol! You will do great!

Today I am two weeks post op which means ... eggs AND MASHED POTATOES! I'm on the puréed stage and I'm so happy, mainly Bc all the liquids were drowning me! Does anyone have any suggestions of what they did on the puréed stage?

Also, does anyone know where I can get chewable Calcium magnesium citrate? Right now I'm taking a liquid one and every time I take it, I feel like I need to throw up. Suggestions please!

You should be able to take Tums (or generic Tums) and it will give you magnesium. I think it's caltrate but my dietitian said it's the same thing. I have a stash of Tums in every room because i had so much heartburn pre-op. I plan to just take a few of those a day and they taste good.

Did you ever think you'd be so excited for eggs and mashed potatoes?? LOL I am like 5 days post op but I can tell that food is starting to sound good again. I'm sure by the time I get to 2 weeks, I'll be as excited for some eggs.

Had my surgery on 9/23. I feel better each day, but the gas is going to kill me. I think my surgeon emptied the entire canister of CO2 in my belly. I had a hernia that had to be repaired before the sleeve, so I have to think I'm more sore than I would normally be. At first, while in the hospital, the doctors kept asking me if I had started to pass gas. I didn't feel like I had any but they still kept asking. Now I know why!! It got really terrible on Friday. The incisions and muscle soreness are nothing compared to the gas moving around in there. Took my gas-x and it worked great but I realized yesterday that I have to continue to take it or the gas returns. I pureed some cream of mushroom Soup and that did not agree with me at all. I think it was just too rich after having nothing but broth for two weeks before surgery. Tasted great, but my tummy didn't like it. However, I am able to drink my Protein. I found one that I actually like (Goodness Mocha from Post) but it doesn't really have enough Protein. So, I bought some plain protein and add a great big scoop to it. This puts the protein way up there and it actually tastes like a milkshake but not sickening sweet as I have found most Protein Drinks to be. Other than that, been drinking Crystal Lite. That's it.

For chewable Calcium, I take Caltrate D chewables. They have 40 mg of magnesium. Is that enough for your requirements? These are the ones my doctor said to take.

Glad for the support on this site and to have contact with others going through the same thing. Hope everyone's day today is better than yesterday!!

I use Bariatric Advantage for my 500mg calcium citrate chewables. Caramel flavor is the only one I can tolerate right now.

Responding to several questions so I won't quote anyone.

Yes, you will gain weight immediately after surgery because of the fluids with saline content. Keep your fluids simple--water or decaff tea in addition to Protein drinks. Gatorade is FULL of salt, try Vitamin Water Zero for different tastes. Be patient.

Not everyone has weight fly off, like 35 pounds in two weeks. This is especially true if you weren't morbidly obese to begin with. I've lots 9 pounds in first two weeks and Dr was fine with it. He said that long term expectations for me and my size were 2 to 4 pounds a week, but exercise would be key.

Use a free app like MyFitnessPal.com to track your food. The phone apps even have a scanner so you can just scan food barcodes to get nutritional information. That way you can make sure you're getting your Protein and Water in and watch the CARBS and SODIUM. It keeps me honest because I've had no problems eating and keeping things down. It would be so easy for me to slip into bad snacking habits.

My doc requires his patients to spend a year in a program called Weight Lose University. I'm only at the beginning. I'm down a total of 19 pounds since starting this program. Still fighting.

Go my calcium chews at Costco...they are sugar free and what my doc recommended.

A question...do you guys have pain after you eat? I've been thinking maybe it's telling me to stop so I do...but maybe I should be feeling something before I get to that point? The pain is short lived but makes me nervous!

I had surgery last Tuesday, 9/23. Due to pain issues, I spent two nights in the hospital. Things seem to be going well. I am having difficulty getting my Protein in. I decided to focus on hydration. I can start full liquids tomorrow. I should be able to get more protein with yogurt and shakes made with milk.

I was sleeved 9/15. I stayed one night in the hospital. I was walking a few hours after surgery. No pain at all. My only issue in the hospital was the horrific headache from the pain meds. No more dilaudid ever! I've been a bit groggy since being home but that finally went away this past weekend. I've been able to drink 67 ounces of Water and about 70g of Protein a day. I go for my post op this Wed. All in all, best decision I have ever made.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
