Appetite: Dead On Arrival

Recommended Posts

I'm new here and banded just 10 days ago and I'm now wondering where in the heck did my APPETITE go? I mean I don't want ANYTHING. I'm currently on full liquid diet and I understand the Protein Shakes, creamy Soups, sugar-free Jello and puddings are there for me to heal properly but I don't even want THAT! I literally have to force myself to eat (a feat that's way too weird for me to comprehend given my life-long love affair with FOOD).

Nothing appeals to me anymore. I've totally lost the taste for my Protein shakes. Is this a phase?could it be simply I'm votes with the foods I've been restricted to eat at Gia time while healing it is this a new phenomenon with me. I'll gladly welcome it -- anything to lose this weight.

Oops! I pushed send by accident while editing my post.

To finish: Could it be that I'm simply bored with the food choices I'm restricted to eat while healing. Will my appetite return? Is anyone experiencing the same or has anyone had a complete loss of appetite after your surgery? How long did it last??

Please help. It's driving me crazy! Although I'm lovng the weight-loss!!

Appetite will come back. Note that right now you're best to follow your team's protocol even though you don't feel like it. Meaning, we think the pre op liquid diet is the hardest. Nope. The post op period was hardest for me. I had six weeks of liquids. After my appetite came back I had to clench my teeth and follow directions. For six weeks. So right now you'll force yourself to eat. Later you'll force yourself to not overeat. Then you'll get a fill and finally the WLS will start to help the process along. Until fills start it's a diet. Take the long view and you'll be successful. Focus on how it feels today compared to yesterday or tomorrow and you'll go crazy.

I reread this and it sounded harsh. The up side is that I lost a boatload of weight when I followed those directions post op. I also was told by my NUT that the strict diet post op was intended by my surgeon for maximum weight loss while healing. liquids only and no more than 800 calories a day. It was hard but it worked for me. I was so grateful for food by the end of the six weeks and it coincided with my first fill. I then went on an Italian vacation and actually maintained my weight loss there. So it had its purpose and I'm glad I trusted the process. Good luck.

I was that way for the first few days, then my appetite returned with a vengeance...even gained weight after my first fill of 4cc's...

But after a few more fills, and hitting the green Zone for good, my appetite, and total lack of interest in food altogether returned and stayed...it has been that way for almost 3 years now....

So perhaps you are feeling the post op swelling, etc, mimicking what the band can do when properly adjusted in the future, if you choose to have it so.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
