Has anyone else experienced this?

Recommended Posts

So I just started my surgery journey today. I went in to speak with the surgeon and insurance lady. My insurance, uhc choice plus, is requesting 5 years of weight history. I'm confronted with 2 problems. First off I never used to go to the Dr because I was always embarrassed to get weighed. Second, I was definitely over weight the last 5 years but my bmi was not 35 or more until recently. Has anyone experienced this and still been approved? I felt so discouraged at this point in my appointment. If I'm denied because of that, can anything be done in an appeal? Help!

I was in your same boat and denied by UHC. I am in the same plan too. Find out if your employer requires the stuff and not just UHC. I wound up self paying and am on my second appeal through my employer. My employer set the requirements not UHC.

I don't think that many people could produce a document charting their weight history from a doctor. I never went to the doc on a regular basis before I had surgery. So I had no documented weight history. So I had to make guesstimates when I was asked about my weight history.

My WLS doc asked me about my weight and if I'd been on medically supervised diets and my medical history, but never asked for proof.

I know everyone's situation is different but this is so stressful. Is there anything I should do to be proactive?

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
