Two and a half years later, digestive problems.

Recommended Posts

I have a digestion problem which may be cause by my sleeve surgery on Jan. of 2011. When I sleep, food & liquids back up into my lungs cause me to aspirate with coughing periods as long as 15 minutes. This is not only from late night eating, food consumed before 6 p.m. will cause me to aspirate when fall asleep about at 11 p.m. On occasions, I have chills and fever the next day (pneumonia). I have been taking Nexium for the last 6 months.

A few days ago I visited a bariatric specialist; he stated my symptoms could be from the sleeve surgery or a Hiatal Hernia. The doctor said a Gastric By-pass maybe the answer. This Wednesday, I am schedule for a series of test to diagnose this dilemma. All else, the surgery have been an overwhelming success. Question for the group, is anyone familiar with this type of digestive problems after sleeve surgery. Thanks

Good luck in getting the trouble resolved! Just a suggestion... if another bariatric surgery is recommended, get a 2nd opinion.

Agreed. This could be something other than the sleeve after two years of success.

I had a lap band in 2003 and this began happening to me last year. I wouldn't eat late and in the middle of the night, I would aspirate, choke, vomit, and never be able to sleep. I was afraid one night I was going to just choke in my sleep. In May, I went to my PCP who referred me to a bariatric surgeon. I had an UGI and the results were than my band slipped, and I had a "slipping" hiatial hernia. I am having a revision surgery to sleeve and hernia repair on August 5. I have never heard anyone say they have this problem with the band, so maybe it it "just" a hiatial hernia. Good luck!

The choking, vomit, aspiating, and not sleeping is on point. Thanks for the heads up. Good luck on your surgery.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
