Cheating during Post Op

The book that was written for Sleeve surgery is very good. You don't have to buy the book (I did and glad I did that) because you can download the chapters you want right here on Bariatric Pal. I suggest you do this. It's a wealth of information & will give you the stages you should be at and what kind of food you should be eating. I combined the info in this book with what my surgeon & NUT gave me & have done really well - except for the stalls. Those suck. Good advice about finding a doctor that will work with you on this surgery. I can't imagine not having a doctor follow your progress. Good luck with your Sleeve. I'm soooooo glad I did this.

Don't worry about what you've done, concentrate on what you are going to do from today forward. That was always one of my downfalls when dieting- if I cheated, I felt like since I'd already blown it, I might as well eat whatever I wanted. Every day is a fresh start, do your best and take it one day at a time. That being said, do be careful not to damage your sleeve. When I am tempted, I think about having to go through all that pain again if I develop a leak and they have to go back in- ugh!

thanks so much for the kind words and great advice. Today after I posted that thread, i prayed, went to church, and am not focused on doing well.

We all need redirected at times bc this I think as much psychological behavior as much as other...we all are having to be more on top of habits changing...it doesn't happen over night...so ur not alone sweetie! I luv this site...soo helpful...chk in when you feel those bumps coming...:) hang in there!

Actually, as I understand it, those who go to Mexico don't have any hoops to jump through at all (behaviorally or educationally) -- they do varying versions (some quite minimal) of pre-op diets to shrink the liver, and then are sent on their way with some printouts. At least that's how understand it. If I'm wrong, please correct my misinformation.

this thread was written not to criticize what happens when you have surgery in Mexico. I mentioned that surgery was in Mexico bc I do not go for follow up visits there. You make it sound like having surgery there is a joke. The point I was making was that I have suffered some shortcomings with post op. As mentioned, i drink Protein Shakes, take Vitamins, and eat Soup. However, one day I did eat 2 nacho/cheeses off my daughters plate. I ate 3 fries once. I had a piece of my hubby's wrap. I could have done the same thing if I had surgery in Texas. I appreciate support to keep me focused. I tested the waters. Yes, I did. However, I'm sure I'm not the only one who has. I just wanted support from you guys to get me back on track.

I misinterpreted your earlier posts as meaning that you had not been told by your surgeon what to eat (and what not to eat) at various points post-surgery.

not was not the case at all. In my opinion, I had a great surgeon in puerto vallarta with a nutritionist who gave me all the info I needed for post op. The post was written bc I had made some mess ups and I needed support from you guys to put me back on track so I wouldn't sink. My apologies for any misunderstandings.

It is not about cheating that is the issue here hun. In fact if she was several months into this ...any of those foods would be fine...in moderation and few and far between.

It is the issue of the possible damage that can be done to her new and baby sleeve.....She has no reason to feel like she failed and I don't think that was what she was asking....That is true it is one of the biggest fears of this journey. And those who are out much longer have terrible anxiety over it...

But right now she is in the honeymoon period and that still is not the point....

It is that she is taking risks that will or could or can cause her severe complications....Also if she cannot buckle down when her sleeve is new then she will need counseling to help her deal with what is setting her off and how to solve it and retrain her brain.....

Not disagreeing with you at all, I think you give wonderful advice! Just thought she could also use some positive encouragement going forward. I certainly wasn't trying to downplay the seriousness of the damage that could be done at this stage, the fear of that is one of my best motivational tools to follow my center's plan!

We all make mistakes. However, I commend you for acknowledging what you did in a public forum. We all can learn from this and hopefully move on. Keep your eye on the prize and continue to pray. This will surely get easier as time goes on. And with the support of this site, we can all succeed. I love how we all embrace one another and support each other.

Hopefully, you are beginning to learn that your new tummy is the boss of you now. You have to listen to your inner "tummy whisperer". Cramps, and the runs, and foamies, etc. can be ways that your tummy communicates with you that it is disagreeing with a choice you made, and please don't do that again for a while......please.....give me a chance to heal already. You will know you are making progress when you have more good days than bad.

This doesn't have to be all trial and error. Our care plans are based on what our doctors believe will work, based on past precedence and best practices in bariatric medicine. Although our plans can be different in many ways, there are enough ways in which they are quite similar: Your procedure can be damaged or undone through either carelessness or medical mishap. Eat Protein and plenty of it, then veg, then minimal fruit. Drink Water until your eyeballs float.

Starchy, sugary carbs need to be drastically less than you were eating before. Take small bites....chew more than you think you have to. Space out your eating and drinking so that you do not drown your food and have a total mudslide. Call you medical bariatric support team for immediate and /or painful issues.

Feel welcome to come here for emotional and practical "been there, done that, got the shirt" support. When you are tempted to fall out of line and you know better, do better. It is easier to do the right thing than to undo the wrong thing. Don't ever feel ashamed to come here and tell us that you had a bad day. There are enough folks here that are far enough ahead of you to give you some good advice. Sometimes the advice isn't pretty. We do all come here for the truth, right? Then, soon enough, you will be able to pay it forward to someone else.

If you are addicted to food and carbs, then you must seek counsel because you are falling down the path of destruction! I would seek help immediately!!! Not to sound scary, just saying that we are not perfect and sometimes we need a bit of hard reality that will not come from this forum.

Well, my 1st week post op i had a 2 fries and felt guilty. I chewed some pizza just for the taste but didn't swallow it. The point is, we all are going to make mistakes because of the temptation when we see food. Just stay strong and things will be ok. I'm at 20 days Post Op and I'm on soft foods for another week then regular foods, here i come! Lol. Once u get to the pureed stage and can eat grits and oatmeal, you'll feel much better.

Stay on track from now on and u won't even think about eating other food. You'll be at week 4 and eating regular foods before u know it!

LOL! No ma'am, I did not get sick. I has 3 small fries. Actually, the first one I chewed and spit out but ate the other 2. No more mistakes for me!

      I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

      Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

        I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

        Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation.       Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
