anyone from texas have DS

Recommended Posts

Trying to find out if anyone has had DS in Texas who may have had medicare medicaid. I previously had the sleeve and am looking for a new doctor since mine is rude and hours away. I live western part of texas but I interested in anything. I'm not even sure where to start to find a doctor For DS in texas but all my surgeon wanted to do was gastric bypass. tells me it isn't medically necessary even though i still have all the same co morbilities and now my knees are worse then they were 3 years ago.medicare will allow a second surgery so i was told if it is medically necessary so i would like a second opinion. I'm frustrated at how the surgeon blames me for not losing weight even though he says i have a small dilation of the sleeve at the top. I've done all I can do paid their nutritionist to help so many times and she is just clueless. I am low carb I do watch calories. Just a waste of my time to travel nearly 4 hours for a clueless nutritionist and a doctor who blames me. I need help finding a doctor and am not sure where to turn to. So any suggestions would be appreciated.

Barker Bariatric center has offices in Amarillo and here in Lubbock. They take a number of different insurances and they are willing to work with patients. I just had my DS last tuesday and can't be happier. Still dealing with Post Op stuff but so far so good.

i wonder if they take my insurance. Or will take a look at my issues i have had just having sleeve and not losing much at all. i started at surgery weight 360 i am now 300 i am low carb. and i do get jealous of all these sleevers who can basically cheat and still lose. Hurts really how my doctor feels i am eating the wrong things when truly i rarely cheat. I just have limitations to exercise.

Are you in Lubbock? Charlotte Hodges with Barker Bariatrics did mine. I had my month checkup yesterday and I have lost 30lbs....so right now I average a pound a day. I have not started eating a lot. I am still mostly on blended food. They really worked with my insurance. I work for the State and we have horrible insurance. The legislator sets our insurance. It took forever to get bariatrics in our insurance plan. All my insurance will pay is a flat rate of $13,000. The only problem I am having is I cannot take any arthritis medicine. I am so stiff and my knees hurt so bad that I cannot not get in any walking or exercising.

I am in Lubbock, Charlotte did my surgery on the 8th. I'm on full liquids. I had my one week follow up on tuesday, and am down about 20lbs from the beginning of this journey.

I'm happy with my experience. I'm happy that she was my surgeon, something about her being a woman was comforting. I'm sure Dr. Barker or one of the other docs would have been great as well.

.

I had my surgery last Monday and Charlotte was my surgeon as well. My insurance had a cap of $20k and I had to pay some directly to barker.

I'm having a very hard week and yesterday and today especially have been very emotional. I've broken down in tears several times bc I'm feeling so hungry and just over all overwhelmed.

I'm so sorry you're feeling so sad. I am 5 1/2 weeks out and I too felt some "buyers remorse" the first 2 weeks. Everyday will get a little easier. It's still the hardest thing I've ever done in my life but better everyday. Just do whatever your drs tell you to do and you will be fine.

I'm so sorry you are having such emotional time. It will get better. I haven't been hungry... That is my biggest problem. I have had a horrible time trying to eat. I mainly eat Soup, I have to have lots of sauce whatever I eat. Good luck and I'm here if you need to talk!

DR. Barker did my DS 3/2012

I only lost 66 lbs and I was at stall for awhile.

Yes, I stopped working out etc. but I'm now back on track and the weight is starting to come off..

My biggest weight was 430lbs, 389 day of surgery now 320 lbs.

What made your weight stall? Were you the wrong things?

I am just 5 1/2 weeks out and just now am able to eat regular food. Although If I eat too much or too fast I throw up. So I'm learning my limits. I was never a binge eater so when I say "too much" I mean six bites instead of four.

I actually was not doing well and last Thursday I went to see my surgeon to find out why and she immediately put me in the hospital and said I was severely dehydrated. I was throwing up even Water. They pumped me full of fluids and Vitamins and I feel much better now. I was to the point that I wouldn't have been able to get better on my own.

Just curious what everyone had to pay out of picket. My insurance had a $20k cap and I was told I would have to pay $2500 to the surgeon (I went to Barker Bariatrics and my surgeon was Charlotte Hodges ) and $1,200 to the anesthesiologist, and the entire $20k would be absorbed by the hospital. However today I I received a bill from the hospital for $1959.96. I'm really bummed. Because money is a huge issue and I may not have gone through with this if I had known the hospital would charge me another $2k.

So I'm just curious what others have had to pay out is pocket to see if what I'm paying is the norm.

Thanks everyone!!!

I feel like I am losing really slow if any at all!! I'm so upset...they say you loose really fast the first six months...well not me!! I'm still on a stall. Soup is still my main go to....lots of things I cant eat. I know I have lost inches because I am wearing tops that I haven't wore in years but I want the pounds to come off!!! My knees are really bad and I have a had time walking, so I am not getting in a lot of exercise

Charlotte did my surgery also....the bills just won't quit coming in. My insurance had a $13K cap. The hospital took most of it. I paid $5500 down to Barker and $1600 at the hospital before the surgery. I had to have a IVC filter before the surgery at Forest Park and my surgery at Dr's Hospital. Right now I think I probably owe another $30K or more....it might be the stress from this that is causing my stall. Told them they would get $10.00 a month till I die. I just do not have it!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
