Home-made tomato soup. Pureed or Soft/Mushy

Recommended Posts

I just made a batch of Tomato Soup. It's tomatoes, stock, garlic, onion, seasonings, and heavy cream (I use a stick blender to blend). Only a few family members like it, so I thought I would freeze it in small portions for after my surgery in August.

I'm trying to organize things as I put them into my freezer for easy reference, and my question is, is this mild enough for the puree stage? It still has some smallish bits of onion/tomato seeds in it. Or should I label it for "mushies"? Also, I realize it doesn't have much Protein, but I'm thinking I can add some unflavored Protein to it after it's reheated and cooled a little.

Actually sounds good.

For me Soups fell into the liquid phase. You just might need to make sure it is well blended before eating. Adding unflavored Protein when ready to eat is a good idea. In the liquid stage some people have difficulty getting Protein in. Make sure you don't heat the Soup above 140 degrees, when adding protein, otherwise you will have lumpy soup

I'd ask about this. I know there was a controversy about Tomato Soup because of the carbs in it. If you calculate the carbs in it, it will probably be more than what they want you to get in the beginning.

That's interesting. I'll ask my nut.

That sounds a little surprising, because a 1/2 cup of tomatoes plain only has 5 g. carbs and there is no where near a half cup of tomatoes in a half cup of Soup (and I think a half cup may be too much at that stage anyway!)

Right after surgery while on a liquid diet only fluids and Protein matter. My liquid phase lasted 3 weeks. Clear Liquids were 2 days and then full liquids thereafter. It is a good idea to check with your NUT

I did not have to worry about carbs until the soft food stage

Its the heavy cream. I cook with it - that will be something else on your stomach.

I think I'd be more worried about the acid from the tomatoes on my healing tummy.

Definitely run it by your NUT. Be curious to know the answer.

So much depends on how much swelling you have and also what the doctor allows.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
