Concern with Taking Pills Post-op

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

Just checking to see if folks are able to take their medication (pills) whole instead of divided or crushed after they had the surgery.

My high blood pressure pill (Adalat XL) must be taken whole due to its 24-hour slow-releasing compound. It cannot be divided or crushed. It is a good medication for me and I am hoping that I do not have to switch to a different medication just because of the size. My current pill size is 9 mm in diameter and 5mm in thickness. It's small but not VERY small.

I started taking my meds uncrushed yesterday....one week post op. I haven't had any problems. I think it just depends on how much restriction you have, and I don't have very much right now.

I don't know what size pills you're taking, but one of my worst PBs to date was on a pill that had been quartered. It was originally about the size of a Tylenol, maybe a little larger. I didn't think it would be a problem, but knew instantly I was wrong. :)

Since then I crushed everything. It's nasty, but better than going through another PB. I use spoonfulls of yogurt smoothie to help. Put the crushed pills on top, put the spoon toward the back of your throat and you can just kind of dump it. You still get some of the flavor, but that's what the rest of the smoothie is for. :D

I am one year post op and can't remember when I started taking pills whole again it was so long ago! But I certainly did once I was several weeks out. I do find now that I sometimes have a harder time when I take all 3 of my blood pressure medication first thing in the morning when I am at my tightest. I keep thinking I will start taking all but the Water pill at night but then I never do it!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
