Exercising is hard. I really have to make myself since my thighs rub together and it is hot and humid here in Austin. I started with just 15 minutes twice a day. Now I have a treadmill in the A/C in front of a TV and I watch my favorite programs. Sometimes I walk barefoot. I park my car farthest in the parking lot. I opt for the stairs often. It gets easier when some weight comes off. I try to call it movement instead of exercising because it sounds better. If you have a dog that helps. Just stare in to their eyes!!

Remember progress not perfection. Oh yeah ..........and persistence, persistence, persistence.

The best exercise is the type that you enjoy. Hiking, tennis, biking, walking, racquetball, swimming, gardening, skiing, X-country skiing and basketball are all types of exercise that can change each time you participate. Where, gym memberships, treadmills and ellipticals are all great exercise, they can become tedious in a short period of time.

Mixing it up with machine type exercising, strength training, yoga and your favorite fun exercise should offer the biggest bang for the buck.

Walking is a great way to exercise; I call it the universal exercise for anyone...

About ten years ago I was grossly overweight, and I took my old lab and started walking the street. Within four months we were hiking the trails through the woods behind my home. By the time winter came, we both had lost weight, and we were doing two hour walks over rough terrain. I was able to lose 70 lbs, just by walking alone. And my lab lost a few inches around her waist and managed to live to almost 15 years old, mostly due to her exercising with dad... gawd, I miss that old lab :(

Unfortunately, over the colder months I managed to put most of the weight back on... if you don't exercise, you will gain pounds. Fast forward: I had the band surgery in 2012. Since then I've lost 60 pounds, but more importantly I kept it off. One secret was joining Planet Fitness (with my doctor's blessing!!!) I started of very slow, maybe doing a mile on the treadmill for thirty minutes everyday. After a year, I am doing up to four miles on the treadmill, everyday, and burning at least 700 calories a day, just by walking on the machine. I feel a lot better, and I know it helps keep the weight off and under control.

Ask your doctor's office for some guidance... fresh out of surgery I'd expect they'd tell you to walk slowly on your street, and no to push it. Once you are healed, a good fitness center (not a body builder muscle gym!) might be a good investment.

If the exercise doesn't lose a lot of weight for you, I will guarantee you will feel better for the energy expended! Good luck!

BTW, my new lab enjoys quiet walks on the street... the wooded trails behind our home are grown over, and full of ticks. If you want to walk your neighborhood, a good dog is the best motivation that you could have!

I started out walking just 10 minutes a day. 2 months post-op, I am walking for an hour, 2+ miles. I feel so much better and I'm really seeing a difference. I no longer get winded which is a blessing. Hoping to join a gym soon too.

I love riding a bike. I'm not sure how long I'll have to wait to anything but walk. How long did you wait? Going to ask my Dr soon.

My personal trainer developed this plan for me.

15 minute warm up on the stationary bike, level of difficulty 6 (to get heart rate 120+)

Then 3 arm machines (weights)

Then 3 leg machines

Also, two stomach/back machines

and then a cool down on the stationary bike for 15 minutes.

I think my workout would have been more aggressive if I wasn't in a wheelchair. He did a plan for my mother-in-law and she has to do time on the treadmill, the stair climber & the elliptical.

Before my accident, when I could walk, the elliptical was my favorite machine. It was easy on my joints which helped a lot. Whatever you end up doing, just try to keep your heart rate above 120 bpm so you know that your exercise routine has a good cardiac component.

Waiting for surgery date…still undecided sleeve vs. RNY

I had the sleeve 9/13/21 and just had a the sleeve to bypass revision on 5/3/23. My HW:321 (I'm 5' 8" tall)and I went down to 254 while doing my 7 nutrition appts required by my insurance company. So just changing the way I ate, I was able to get those pounds off w/o surgery. I have many Co morbidities mixed hyperlipidemia, diabetes, htn, MI due to covid. I had read and done quite a bit of research so I could choose the best surgery for myself and learned previous to my sleeve that someone as heavy as I was and all the Co morbidities I have, it was better in my situation to have the bypass but, my DR. Kept saying I would have the same results with the sleeve. Every time I would see him and say to him that I felt it would be best to just get the bypass, he just shot me down and said the sleeve would produce the same results! Why he kept asking me which surgery I wanted at each visit just to tell me the sleeve was all I needed still a mystery to me????? Let's just say, my Dr. Was wrong you see, the surgeries are both about the same price, but the sleeve is easier for the surgeon to perform so I think my DR. Just wanted the easier since he would get the same pay no matter what. After sleeve surgery I did go from 254 to 226 BUT that's just because you are healing from surgery and can't eat anyway as soon as I recovered! I was starving non-stop. I went right back up and stayed at 248. Still had to take cholesterol meds, blood pressure meds, diabetes meds etc. I'm now almost 4 weeks post op the bypass and feel great. I'm not starving all the time, went from 248 to 220 and doing great! Not only what you just read about my story, you also hear about a lot of people needing revision after the sleeve due to acid reflex like severe acid reflex all the time. So the bypass surgery is the only way to stop This reflux if you acquire this condition after sleeve surgery. The regain possibility is higher with sleeve than bypass so just think about all these factors before you make your decision. I wish I would have just had the bypass and saved myself from having to have 2 surgeries in under 2 years. The bypass surgery was also less painful for me lol! I don't know if the new surgeon was better or what but, I was home the next day. After the sleeve I had to stay an extra night due to the nausea and vomiting all night and for pain control.

Who knew Filet Mignon would make me so sick. Leftovers from Mother's Day.  On the upside..next day I started walking outside a little over a mile without stopping or back pain. That's a bit deal for me considering how inactive I've been for years. Woot woot!

Five-week follow-up for gastric bypass and now on lifetime food plan. No restrictions.  In all that time I was fortunate to get sick only one time, week 1, on Easter. Chicken broth...go figure.
