Am I doing anything wrong?

Recommended Posts

So I had the Gastric Sleeve May 29th, over a whole month ago. I don't feel like I have lost any weight at all. Sure my pants are more lose than they were...but I am a tad bit nervous I am doing something wrong.

My Diet goes a long the lines of something like this:

9:00am - 6 oz Protein shake

(I finish drinking that at around 45 minutes. I just sip.)

12:00pm- 4 oz baked or grilled chicken, 2 oz of a vegetable (or starch depending on the day)

(I take anywhere from 45-60 minutes eating this).

4:00pm -5 oz Chili, Soup or some type of Protein.< /p>

7:00pm- 3 strawberries or equivalent with 2 oz yogurt.

10:00pm- 1 SF Popsicle

I know I am not eating the 6 small meals a day. I drink liquids as much as I can handle. My stomach talks to me all the time when I am eating. Sometimes, I get this weird pain/discomfort in my chest while/after eating. Is that normal?

I am also walking 30-45 minutes a day, taking a break on Sundays (religious reasons).

Another thing I'm worried about is my energy levels, there are days I want to sleep 12+ hours, and sometimes I do... I don't know. I guess I am just nervous I'm doing something wrong. Any ideas, guidance?

Are you following your plan? All of our plans are so different, I think none of us can really tell you if you are doing something "wrong" unless you are doing something crazy like sitting down to eat a half a pizza and following that pint of ice cream and a six pack. If you are unclear about what your plan is, and how to follow it, definitely contact your surgeon or dietician.

I will say that I am surprised someone so early out can eat four ounces of dense Protein, let alone four ounces of dense protein plus a couple ounces of veggies. I couldn't eat that much right now, and I'm over a year out. But we all have different capacities. Just because I couldn't do it doesn't mean it isn't normal and right for you.

The pain/discomfort in your chest is a signal you have eaten too much. When that happens, figure out how much you ate, and make sure you eat less of whatever that food was the next time you try it.

I think the lack of energy is pretty normal -- you are still recovering from surgery and adjusting to a new way of eating and exercising. If your body feels tired, definitely feed it the sleep that it needs! But if you are concerned, again, maybe bring it up with your surgeon just to be sure.

Good luck!

You said you don't feel like you've lost any weight at all. How much have you lost?

Agreed! Can't compare yourself to others :-) I did the same thing (I'm only 5 weeks out) I was getting on the scale WAY too much and getting discouraged. So....once a week weigh ins is what I am trying to do. Secondly, my nutritionist said that I should only give myself max of 30 minutes for each meal. Giving yourself more time may allow you to eat more than you really need to for that meal. I was doing something like you 45-60 minutes and I was able to eat probably more than I should have too. At this point they say 1/4 cup or 4 oz total is what we should be able to eat. Shortening up my meal time has helped me I think. I can tell when I'm full as well.

Hang in there! Any weight loss is weight loss! My biggest thing is getting all my liquids in!! need that to help the weight move too. :-)

I guess I kinda have been comparing myself to others. Well, that stops now! :) Thanks. I will definitely try to speed up my meals a bit and cut back on the amount per meal. Maybe it will make a difference. Thanks again.

I was sleeved April 23rd and I only eat 4 oz of food. I have a bunch if 4oz containers... If it doesn't fit I don't eat it! I wasn't able to eat meat until the 6th week out! I could only have fish the 3rd 4th and 5th week!!

Sounds pretty awesome to me!!! I figure that I lost that easy Water weight pre-surgery so after surgery was true fat loss. It's more noticeable when you get into clothes that you couldn't fit into pre-surgery, but if you are like me, you were wearing clothes that were really too small to begin with. If you need a reminder of what you've accomplished in only 30 days, fill a backpack with 18 lbs of groceries and haul it around for a half an hour. I guarantee you will soon realize what you've accomplish, and think, you are only just starting. Keep up the good work!!

I find myself saying the same thing all the time "I've only lost 25 lbs in 6 weeks". Then I stop and think-in what other world are you going to lost 25lbs in 6 weeks?!?! I mean it's incredible, and so is your weight loss.

I made the mistake of weighing myself daily and comparing it to everyone else who had surgery the same week as me. We all have different bodies, different doctors, and different plans. I stalled my 2nd or 3rd week and was crying and upset asking myself 'What did I do?' Everyone else was losing weight and I wasn't. It's defeating. Finally I told my boyfriend to hide my scale and stopped focusing on the number. Instead I noticed my pants were a bit looser, and my tops fit a whole lot better. Just keep doing what you're doing and it will pay off! I measure all my meals (because I tend to eat too much too quickly) and I've found that 1/4c or 2 oz is pretty perfect for me to feel full and not have discomfort. My friends keep asking me how I'm doing and I keep saying I'm losing but every. single. pound. feels like its resisting...like my body doesn't want to let it go! Even though I feel like that I'm still winning! Any loss is a loss and it's more than I could have ever done on my own! You're doing great! Keep it up!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.
