Your Lap Band Prego Experience?

Recommended Posts

Hi all! I just passed my 5 years bandiversay on 6/19! I had lost 103lbs in 3 years but due to the stresses of life I fell off the wagon and went from 150 – 180. I’m at 176 now and am super focused. I’d like to get back to 150 before trying to conceive.

I’m looking for those who’ve had a lap band pregnancy. I’d like to know your experience in general and how much weight you put on during your pregnancy. Also, how was it trying to get it off after giving birth?

Thanks!

Hi!

congrats on your terrific weightloss, I was only 35lbs down with the band when I got pregnant with twins, I had an unfill and was super careful with what I ate and gained a total of 15lbs, within two months post-delivery I lost the 15lbs (I had a miscarriage along the way and only one baby survived but thats another story). I honestly think at that moment if I had gone to get my fills back in and refound my green zone things would have gone smoothly but I had several other issues pop up that took my eyes off the target for quite a while.

So I think with your focused attitude you will do just fine! My main advice would be that if you have an unfill to go get it back in as soon as youve recovered from giving birth. Good luck! :-)

I was 100 lbs down when I got pg. I had half of my Fluid taken out due to swelling and ate whatever I wanted during pregnancy and paid the price! I gained 60 lbs in the end but had no issues during pregnancy or labor and birth. My guy is 18 months and I'm just now even getting back into the swing of things. I stopped caring about myself for a long time. Even now I'm not in the green and my weight loss has been more about re-learning self control more than anything.

I agree staying focused will be key...also when and if you breastfeed make sure you have ways to keep your calorie intake up and stay hydrated! I cannot tell you how important fluids are to breastfeeding.

Good luck!

Great job!! Here's a bit of my journey...I had one pregnancy before being banded and that little guy is now 4 years old. I was 216 when I got pregnant with him and gain 45lbs. I had gestational diabetes, Protein in my urine and TERRIBLE kidney stones. I lost all that weight in the first few weeks, just due to my horrible eating habits and the fact that I was too busy with him to eat, I didn't nurse him so I wasn't too worried about my own nutrition. I waited a year after being banded before trying to get pregnant again and was down to 165, it took much longer to conceive, 7 months instead of happening the first month like it did the first time. I couldn't even keep Water down and had half of my Fluid taken out at 10 weeks. After that I had an AMAZINGLY enjoyable pregnancy living it up and being able to eat all the things I hadn't in the last year and a half and I gained 60 lbs... But I had NO health issues at all this time! It's really was a fantastic pregnancy, but the weight didn't come off near as easily as it did the first time around! My daughter is now 3 months old and I'm struggling to balance weight loss with nursing. I lost half of it in the first 6 weeks and then went in for a fill, but it's been pretty slow going since then. Good luck and try to find an OBGYN who is knowledgeable about the band if you can, then you can relax and enjoy your pregnancy knowing they've got you covered on both ends!

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
