I met with the psychologist today and I am some what confused. She told me basically the lap band wasn't a good choice because my BMI is 48. I weigh 279lbs. However my surgeon said it would be could for me. Has anyone had anything similar like this said to them.

I would think your surgeon would know more about WLS than a psych Dr. would. Just sayin'. I love my lap band, it was easy to follow the Drs rules, I made good healthy choices most of the time, and the weight fell right off . Best decision ever !

I believe your psychologist might be focusing on your habits and personality with food and that is important. Problem here is, you'll have to change that with any of the WLSs. There are lots here that have made it work with them and you can too. Do your own research, confer with your surgeon and do whats best for you. Don't let anyone make your decision for you. Its you that has to make it work so it should be your decision. That being said, I love my band:)

No one can make this decision but you. Whats right for one may not be right for the next person. Well meaning people sometimes throw their opinion where it isn't needed or wanted and many times don't know what they are talking about.

Look up all surgeries, most are successful, sometimes they are not. Figure out what you think and why one would be better over the others and go to your surgeon and discuss your thoughts with him/her.

I'm surprised that your psychologist would say this. He's not a trained doctor for lapband or any surgery. He only deals with moods,thoughts an feelings. He must be thinking of a gathering of information after someone has a lapband put inside them to make this kind of decision. Your surgeon and maybe with your dietitian knows what may work for you.

I had a Allergan lapband installed about 2 years ago. I've had NO issues.

My BMI was about 47 (295 - 5'7'') and I was actually turned down for lap-band by my original surgeon. I saw his colleague and he said he could def see me being successful with the lap-band at thats what i chose.

i'm 7 weeks post-op, almost 40 lbs down, and feel alive again. You need to make the decision you're comfortable with. Yes the lap-band requires more intuitive eating, learning your soft stops, but I think anyone could be successful at any surgery if they really want to.

Thanks tmf. Here's the story behind the stats. I wanted the band because I didn't want such an invasive surgery as the sleeve is. My PCP told me I wouldn't be able to lose enough weight with the band. I proved her wrong big time. In fact, I'm about 15 lbs. less than she is. So there! LOL.

And....I didn't do anything crazy in order to lose so much. I weigh and measure my food and stay under 1,200 calories a day. I also didn't go crazy with the exercise. I couldn't because I had horrible joint degeneration and was in so much pain, I could barely move. Now I bike, swim laps, and take Water exercise classes. And my forum name was my dream...to go walking. I'm living that dream now. I walk everywhere.

I would ask the psychologist why he/she thinks you will not be able to lose the weight you want by getting the band. I'd be curious if was their prejudice at work here or if there was a specific reason for the remark.

Whatever you wind up doing, I wish you much success.

@@sexy_mamma1224 I think someone above may have touched on why the psych Dr. said this to you. Though the reason she gave you is not a good answer. It's not about your BMI, it's about your behaviors with food from her perspective.

That said however, no matter what WLS you were to have you will need to be compliant. The band requires this right up front from you and you have to invest the time and self control to follow it through. Some of the other surgeries "enforce" a behavior change immediately upon surgery that you can not get around. They force you into compliance but where psych go wrong is that they recommend these surgeries that force the compliance and that does not help you with the behavior changes. So once you are in a "comfort" zone 6 months to a year out if those behaviors have not changed then you are in a position to gain weight back.

That was why I chose the band. It has forced me to make changes in my behavior and how I relate to food and the food choices that I make and it gave me room and time to make my mistakes along the way and learn from them. Now I can be in the green zone and know how to eat and what to choose to eat for my health and well being and it is now a way of life for me. I don't feel "robbed" or deprived the way I might have if I was forced to stop eating sweets or when and what I wanted to. I was able to make the changes and integrate them into my life style in a way that was not abrasive to me.

Not everyone works that way, and you have to find what works for you and your life style. So as others have said do some research, speak to people who are living with different WLS tools and see how they are doing and see if their experience matches the one you want you have. There are some live local Bariatric Pal support groups starting up around the country, and that is a great place to go and meet people and ask questions to those who are living with these tools. Then you can follow up with the Dr. and surgeons and get the "medical" info on the different surgeries and decide what will be best for you.

I am wishinging I did the sleeve instead of the band.....I only have 4 cc's in my band....get stuff caught all the time. Started out really strong in the weight loss dept. Slowly creeping back on...... I'd love any and all advise.....

When did you last see your surgeon?

When did you last speak to your nutritionist?

What foods get stuck and what foods don't?

How many fills and when was the last?

Really? REALLY???? BMI is the reason for not doing a band? Uh... I started at 5' 7" 378 pounds and a BMI of 59. My surgeon didn't hesitate to say yes to installing a band around my gut. My starting weight and high BMI were a concern as far as getting me safely through surgery but my surgeon and my psychologist (with whom I spoke for all of about seven minutes) had no issues with it where a band was concerned.

The type of WLS each person chooses needs to be based on factors like their own food issues, their body type, lifestyle, how they like to eat, what they are comfortable with, what they are willing to live with, what they can be compliant with.

If you are a volume eater who needs help with Portion Control and are okay with regular aftercare appointments and are a control freak who loves the idea of being able to customize your WLS tool to your own specifications, a Lap Band may be just the thing for you. (Those were the biggies in my decision when I chose the band. :D )

If you want restriction but not the aftercare, don't feel the need to customize, the Sleeve may be just the thing.

Or, a Gastric Bypass...

Only you can make that decision, after doing your research, reading up on all of the options available to you, thinking carefully about your own issues and which tool will best help you reach your goals. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks, it only matters what YOU want, what YOU need. Clear the voices from the outside and look within yourself and you will find the right answer for you. :)

Hey, Sexy-momma.

I have been fine. The surgery did kick up the fibro I have but my regular meds got that on track within a day. All else has been good. Just normal discomforts from surgery. I didn't have gas pains or anything luckily but the incisions under some are sore, bending over and have to be careful not exhausting myself.

I didnt seem to have much swelling because after the first few days I can eat and drink fine.

      2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

      I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

      Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

        I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

        Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation.       Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
