Started full liquids and CPAP last week. Going crazy!

Recommended Posts

I am scheduled for my sleeve on the 25th. Thank goodness that is only 9 more days! Started the full liquid preop diet last Wednesday and got a CPAP machine on Thursday. I feel like I am losing my mind! Feeling dizzy, nauseated, and exhausted! I definitely slept better without the CPAP, but apparently they can track it and if I put off using it, they will pick it up. I have not cheated on either though. Not really seeking advice or anything. Just whining!

Once you get used to the cpap, you will sleep much better with it. Experiment with the humidity and different masks too, that could be why you're not sleeping so well with it. I had a sleep study a few years ago and they told me I stopped breathing an average of 56 times an hour. But my sleep apnea isn't just caused from being overweight. Once I got used to it, I realized I had been sleeping horribly my whole life. I don't know about other machines, but mine has a setting where you can ease up to full pressure. Starts soft then works it's way up over an amount of time you designate. That helped when I first started using it. And I had to go through 3 different styles of masks before I was comfortable. AND.......I whined plenty too at the time :)

Good Luck

beachgurl84 Thanks for the encouragement. I have the nasal pillows and there seem to be lapses. I was wondering about using one of the masks that cover the nasal area rather than just the two small pillows. I am going to give it a little more time, but after that, I am definitely going to look into options/different masks.

@@beachgurl84 I had the same experience... three different masks before I ended up with the nasal pillows. And my machine has that ramp up feature that starts with lower pressure and builds up over 20 minutes.

I agree -- I had no idea how bad my sleep was until I started using the machine. It actually took me 2-3 months of the machine to start really noticing a difference but MAN is it better!

@@ChristmasJanet -- I'm not encouraging you to cheat at all -- I firmly believe apnea is SO dangerous and needs to be treated. Mine also has the modem and if I'm not compliant enough, insurance will stop paying for it. But, my insurance considers 4 hours a night to be compliant. So, you really should try to use it and get used to it but if it is completely bugging you and you've had it on for at least 4 hours, you'd probably be ok taking it off then. And a missed night here and there wouldn't cause them to take it -- I think my insurance requires 6 nights a week but I always use 7 and get more than 4 hours with it because it just works so darn good! :)

Maybe you can call your insurance and ask them the requirements. At least then you'll get a little peace of mind if you just really get frustrated and need a night without it. And do talk to your doctor and try different masks and pillows. The pillows come in different sizes. Don't think because you're a big lady you need a big size. My nose is pretty small and the nostrils are close together and I wear an extra small in the ladies version. The only thing I ever use that's a size extra small! lol

Best wishess.

What really surprised me was how good my feet and toes felt after starting my cpap. I would wiggle my toes and marvel at how good they felt, as if I'd had a foot massage. I guess my sleep was so poor that even my feet were suffering! I never want to be without my cpap again, even if I lose all the weight and no longer have apnea. It really helps me sleep and I am no longer afraid of smothering in my sleep. :)

jcp Thanks for the encouraging words. I am still fighting it, but seemed a little better today. (Day sleeper.) I think I am going to try smaller nasal pillows tomorrow to see if that helps.

It does take time! And not all masks will be right for you so please talk to your supplier about finding something more comfortable. But eventually you will look forward to that warm soothing current of air and you will feel tons better, your memory will improve, and you'll be refreshed after sleep. Who knew breathing was so important? :)

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
